Unveiling New Data and Partnerships

Leaders will lead a virtual briefing to unveil new data from Open Doors®. Learn about the latest advancements at the IIE Center for International Opportunities, including three exciting partnerships and activities coming in the next year that will expand students’ access to study abroad.

A Detailed Look at IEW Activities

A variety of events are planned to celebrate International Education Week, offering opportunities for learning, engagement, and cultural exchange.

Educational and Academic Events

  • Distinguished Research Award Lecture: A professor of History, will present his research. This event is free and open to the public and there will be a reception after the talk.

  • Global Classrooms Awareness Display and Talk: Students will showcase what learning looks like around the world through an interactive exhibit comparing classrooms, learning styles, and education systems from different countries using photos, facts, or QR codes linking to short videos.

  • Islamic Art Forms: A Lecture: Join the Muslim Student Association for an engaging exploration of the rich artistic traditions of the Islamic world. This talk will highlight the history, symbolism, and diverse expressions found in many Islamic art forms. Perfect for art enthusiasts, students, and anyone interested in cultural heritage.

  • Leading Study Abroad Trips Roundtable: Thinking about leading a study abroad program? Join this interactive roundtable to learn what it takes to plan and guide a successful trip. Hear from experienced leaders, explore key steps in program preparation, and gain practical tips for creating safe, engaging, and meaningful international experiences for students.

  • Native American Heritage Month Celebration: Join the Center for Understanding Belonging and Experiences (CUBE) for a powerful celebration of Native American Heritage Month as we honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the Americas. This event is a space to uplift Indigenous voices, deepen cultural understanding, and foster meaningful connections between communities. Everyone is welcome to come learn, listen, and celebrate.

  • International Tea Party: Join Honors while they serve tea (in real tea cups) and international snacks to share. There will also be an international students’ panel to share their culture and customs.

  • Cultural Games from Around the World: Get ready for an unforgettable evening of fun and connection at our International Game Night! Join us for an exciting lineup of board games, card games, and even a few thrilling rounds of popular group games from Mexico to Malawi! Feel free to bring your favorite game to share with everyone!

  • Thanksgiving Pie Festival: Let’s celebrate all the things we’re thankful for with a plate of pie! You’ll learn more about why pie is one of America’s favorite desserts at Thanksgiving and throughout the year.

Film Screenings and Discussions

  • Movie Night with the German Club viewing Habermann: Habermann is a war drama film based on the true story of a Sudeten German mill owner, August Habermann, and the turbulent events that engulfed his family and community during the Nazi occupation and the subsequent expulsion of ethnic Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II. The film depicts Habermann's attempts to navigate the escalating political chaos and protect his family, including his Czech wife, who is secretly half-Jewish, as he is forced to make difficult compromises. It highlights the suffering and complex relationships of both Germans and Czechs in the Sudetenland region, dramatizing the little-known post-war expulsions of millions of Germans from Czechoslovakia.

  • Arise! Movie Night viewing Fatima: We will be watching the movie Fatima (2020). Pizza will be provided! All are welcome!

  • French Movie Night viewing of Chevalier: Come join the History Club, French Club, and Honors Club movie night to watch Chevalier. Popcorn, snacks, and beverages will be provided. Chevalier is a biographical drama film based on the life of the 18th-century French-Caribbean composer Joseph Bologne, also known as the Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The story follows Bologne, the illegitimate son of a slave woman and a white French plantation owner, as he rises to become a celebrated violinist, composer, and fencer in French society, navigating a world of racial prejudice and an ill-fated love affair. The film depicts his triumphs and struggles, including his controversial relationship with Marie Antoinette and his eventual involvement in the French Revolution.

Interactive and Creative Activities

  • Book Drive: Throughout the entire week, we will have a book drive where ISO can collect used books/school supplies, or educational materials for donation to schools abroad or homeless shelters within South Bend. Students, staff, and faculty can include a “Note of Hope or Favorite Quote” station, where you can write short encouragement notes for recipients.

  • Study Abroad Tables: Learn about study abroad opportunities from students who have travelled on one of our many trips we have offered in the past.

  • Knitting for Peace: Bring your needles and yarn (or we can lend you what you will need) to sit a while in good company as you stitch up your next needlework project. There will be a brief presentation on how Americans have deployed needle and yarn to comfort the afflicted, clothe the chilled, foment revolution, promote peace, and spread the word. In addition to needles and yarn, we will also provide patterns for clothing and whimsies!
