Students should consider searching for internships after they have completed the two Architecture + Digital Media courses, Foundation Studio and Design Studio 1. It's common to find summer positions, so start looking online and networking a few months beforehand. Architecture internships can be found year-round, although many architecture firms may expect to have more interns over the summer. Depending on where you would like to intern abroad, there may be more internship opportunities in architecture when the economy is doing well or when there major developmental plans underway.

As an architecture intern, you may find yourself conducting on-site visits to project locations, where you'll perform research, document existing conditions, and gather data to inform the design and planning process. The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) strives to make our intern experience substantive, challenging and rewarding. The AOC summer internship program is for current students. You may be eligible if you're currently enrolled in high school, college, trade school or another qualifying educational institution. This program offers paid opportunities to explore a federal career within the AOC while completing your education.

AOC summer internships include:

12 weeks of paid participation

Internships are awarded to students currently pursuing undergraduate majors in architecture, civil/structural engineering, electrical engineering, fire protection engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, mechanical engineering and urban design/planning. Undergraduate students must complete two years of an accredited design program to participate in a SmithGroup internship.

SmithGroup Design a Better Future Scholarship

We created the SmithGroup Design a Better Future scholarship program to put action to our mission to create a better future for our communities. This scholarship program provides tuition assistance and professional opportunities to students who demonstrate commitment to advancing inclusion in the design industry. Since its inception, the program has awarded \$240,000 to 40 recipients across the United States. Each year, five students who demonstrate a commitment to advancing an inclusive design industry are selected to receive a one-time award of \$6,000 in tuition support. Recipients selected also receive a paid summer internship at any one of SmithGroup’s locations offering the student’s discipline (internship is a program requirement).

Eligibility requirements include:

Applicants must be a current undergraduate (at least a junior level standing) or graduate student in an accredited architecture, interior design, urban planning, landscape architecture or engineering program (civil/structural, mechanical, electrical and fire protection) in the United States.
Applicants must be enrolled students during the Fall 2026 semester as scholarships are paid directly to the academic institution.
Applicants must be available for a paid summer internship during the summer of 2026.
Applicants should have a current GPA of 3.0 or better.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Required Application Materials include:

A cover letter explaining your involvement in organizations and activities that demonstrate your commitment to inclusion within your university, community, and/or the AEC industry.
A resume.
A link to an online portfolio (for architecture, landscape architecture and interior design students only).

Preparing for Your Internship Search

Prior to beginning their search for internship positions, students should contact the program director, Professor Drew Armstrong, who oversees the internship program for Architectural Studies. Prior to beginning their internship, students must complete an Internship Agreement form with their future employer/mentor and return the form to the program director for approval.
