Navigating the World of Educational Research: An Introductory Overview
In an era dominated by data-driven decision-making, the ability to critically evaluate and conduct research is an indispensable skill for educators. This article serves as an introduction to the multifaceted field of educational research, equipping readers with the foundational knowledge needed to become informed consumers and producers of research. It emphasizes the importance of research in improving educational practices, understanding learning processes, and addressing critical issues within educational contexts.
Why Research Matters in Education
The phrase "evidence-based practice" is becoming increasingly prevalent in education, highlighting the growing recognition of research's role in shaping effective strategies. Research offers several key benefits to educators:
- Improving Practice: Research can suggest ways of improving practice that have been verified with many applications and by many different types of people, which is difficult for practitioners.
- Understanding Learning: Research can add to what we know about how people learn and what we can do help facilitate the learning process.
- Addressing Knowledge Gaps: Research can address areas in which little is know, like perhaps the effects of online versus traditional classroom learning.
- Extending Knowledge: Research can allow us to extend what we know in ways we never conceived.
- Verifying Findings: Research can act as a test to verify previous findings.
- Incorporating Diverse Perspectives: Research can add an important perspective for different learning types. Much of the educational research prior to the Eighties is based on able, white, middle-to-upper class males.
In an increasingly data-driven society, it is vital that educators know how to locate, find, and interpret research on their own. Further, educators need to be able to conduct quality research to examine issues within their own contexts.
The Research Process: A Cyclical Journey
Educational research is not a haphazard endeavor but rather a systematic and cyclical process. It typically begins with identifying a research problem or issue of study. It then involves reviewing the literature, specifying a purpose for the study, collecting and analyzing data, and forming an interpretation of information. This process culminates in a report, disseminated to audiences, that is evaluated and used in the educational community.
Key Research Approaches: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods
To navigate the landscape of educational research effectively, it's crucial to understand the primary research approaches:

- Quantitative Research: This type of research design is best for “What?” questions.
- Qualitative Research: This type of research design is good for any questions you can think of, particularly those that can’t be answer easily with numbers alone.
- Mixed Methods Research: This approach combines both qualitative and quantitative methods, leveraging the strengths of each to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the research problem.
Distinguishing Primary and Secondary Sources
Where most introductory students struggle is in distinguishing primary and secondary sources. We’ll return to this later, but to be sure we are clear from the beginning. Empirical research implies that the study is original and stresses systematic observation. Journal articles and other types of peer-reviewed sources (such as academic conference papers) are the main venue for empirical research. These first publications of empirical research are also referred to as primary sources. In academic settings, you are generally only to use primary sources. If nothing else, you can visually tell that periodicals, such as newspapers, magazines, online weekly reports (such as Education Week), or even text books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias (like Wikipedia) are much different. The usual tip is that these types of publications have advertisements, where journal articles generally do not. These are all secondary sources. You might see references to research, but the actual report is in a journal article, as above. You are generally not to use secondary sources.
Ethical Considerations in Educational Research
Ethics are paramount in any research endeavor, especially when involving human participants. Researchers must prioritize the well-being, privacy, and autonomy of individuals involved in their studies. Updated and expanded coverage of the history of research ethics involving human research participants and tips for completing IRB applications further emphasize the importance of ethics in all research projects.
Resources for Aspiring Researchers
For those embarking on their research journey, resources like Craig Mertler’s "Introduction to Educational Research" offer invaluable guidance. This text helps readers every step of the way as they plan and execute their first educational research project. Offering balanced coverage of qualitative and quantitative methods, an emphasis on ethics, and a wealth of new examples and concrete applications, the new edition continues to use conversational, nontechnical language to help students clearly understand and apply research concepts, principles, procedures, and terminology. The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Educational Research by Craig A. Mertler guides readers through the steps of the research process to help them plan and execute research projects in educational settings. With balanced coverage of qualitative and quantitative methods, an emphasis on ethics, and concrete applications of methods, this text offers a practical presentation of the research process. New to the Fourth Edition are more information on interviews throughout the book, expanded coverage of qualitative research, and a thoroughly updated chapter on action research. Three current research articles are included as appendices to demonstrate qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.
