Iowa Western Community College: Launching Your Criminal Justice Career
The field of law enforcement is challenging, demanding, and exciting. If it’s a field that interests you, Iowa Western's Criminal Justice program is the perfect choice. The CRJ program at IWCC will provide interested students in our region and surrounding area with the opportunity to pursue a field in public safety and/or advance their skills in public safety.
Experienced Instructors and Flexible Scheduling
Iowa Western instructors have work-related experience in criminal justice, so you’ll gain first-hand knowledge of what’s involved in this field. Day, night, and online classes are available, giving you flexibility with your personal schedule. Upon request, job placement help is offered.
Curriculum Overview
Here's a glimpse into the coursework involved in the Criminal Justice program:
- SOC 230 - Juvenile Delinquency 1 (3.0 Credits)
- SOC 240 - Criminology 1 (3.0 Credits)
The program requires a total of 64.0 semester hours. The fourth semester includes Humanities Electives (6.0 Credits), General Electives (3.0 Credits), and a Distributed Requirement (5.0 Credits). One elective must also satisfy the Human Perspective Requirement.
Career Paths and Opportunities
This program is designed for students intending to transfer on to a four-year institution upon completion of this two-year degree. However, jobs are available for students who earn an associate’s degree and want to directly enter the work force. This program prepares students for careers in Law Enforcement (Police, Deputy Sheriff, Trooper) and Correction Officer. Additionally, the program helps individuals move on to advanced training or gain additional skills to enhance their career.

While students are able to enter the job force immediately after graduating, many are encouraged to transfer to a four-year institution to improve professional advancement chances.
