Enter Sandman in College Football 25: The Tradition Lives On
One of the fundamental ingredients that separates college football from every other sport is the pageantry of each game. The release of “EA Sports College Football 25” video game has been much anticipated. The game had been on hiatus since 2014 due to a lawsuit surrounding name, image and likeness. The game showcases unique atmospheres, pageantry and entrances for top college football programs.
The Anthem of Virginia Tech: Enter Sandman
For Virginia Tech fans and football fans alike, the anthem of the VIrignia Tech Hokies is here. Enter Sandman. It’s in the game. The custom started when the stadium installed a new scoreboard, and the team debated between using Guns 'N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" and the Alan Parsons Project's "Sirius" before settling on this famed tune.
Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” has been played at every VT home game since 2000, and every fan sitting in the stadium jumps up and down to every beat. Before each player races out to the field they touch the Hokie Stone, with signs on each side of it. On the left reads, “For those who have passed. All of these nuances are showcased in the game.
"Enter Sandman" is now "the unofficial theme of the Virginia Tech athletic department" and electrifies the atmosphere in Lane Stadium every year.
At last year's ACC media day kick, Hokies head coach Brent Pry talked about coming out of the tunnel to Enter Sandman and why Virginia Tech has the best gameday atmosphere in the country:"I love running out of that tunnel, even when I watch the highlight video of it I get chills. It's special. I think for all of us, you love the competition, you love playing in front of big crowds, you love the excitement of the entrance. So we're very fortunate that way."

Coach Pry goes on to say: " I think our fans are some of the best in the country. They pack the place, and they're jumping to that tune. We come out of the locker room, and Johnny Cash's "God's Gonna Cut You Down" is just kind of slow playing as you take that walk. By the time you hit that tunnel, man, it's the best. I just try to make sure I don't stumble coming out.
A Close Call: Licensing Issues and Generic Replacements
Ahead of Friday’s public release, cllct ranked the top 10 team entrances in the game. Virginia Tech’s entrance is the best in the sport. Hands down. The game showcases this environment, with fans leaping out of their seats, but it’s not “Enter Sandman” playing. The licensing was reportedly too expensive for EA to include in the game - though EA did find a generic song that sounds incredibly similar.
Back in May, it was reported that Metallica's Enter Sandman would not be included in Virginia Tech's iconic entrance at Lane Stadium for the game. Instead, EA Sports would settle for a generic rock anthem. That generic anthem turned out to be almost indistinguishable from the actual song.
Sure, there are no vocals, and there are slight changes to the song's progression. But it's so obviously trying to be a replica of Enter Sandman -- almost to the point that Metallica might take issue with it. Fans certainly appreciated that EA Sports tried to come as close as it could to Enter Sandman.
The Origin and Evolution of a Tradition
Every great tradition has an origin story - and Virginia Tech’s iconic ‘Enter Sandman’ entrance is no exception. The year was 2000, and Lane Stadium had just unveiled a brand-new video scoreboard. Of course, the debut came with a twist worthy of its thunderous soundtrack. The first time ‘Enter Sandman’ blasted through the speakers, a lightning storm rolled through Blacksburg, forcing a cancelation of the game. ESPN’s Lee Corso even had his rental car struck by lightning.

It took about a year for the final piece of magic to fall into place. During a chilly night in 2001, a member of The Marching Virginians started hopping up and down to stay warm.
Seismic Activity and Social Media Frenzy
By 2011, ‘Enter Sandman’ wasn’t just a pregame song - it was a force of nature. When the Hokies hosted rival Miami that fall, the crowd’s synchronized jumping registered as seismic activity. Seismographs near Lane Stadium picked up measurable tremors right as the team stormed the field to Metallica’s thunderous riff.
After a year without full crowds due to the COVID pandemic, Lane Stadium roared back to life on September 3, 2021, and ‘Enter Sandman’ was louder than ever. Virginia Tech was set to open the season under the lights against No. 10 North Carolina, and the anticipation was electric. The cameras shook. The crowd jumped. Videos of that entrance spread like wildfire across social media, racking up millions of views within hours.
Metallica Comes to Lane Stadium
For 25 years, Hokie Nation has jumped, screamed, and shaken Lane Stadium to the sound of Metallica’s 'Enter Sandman'. Under the lights of Blacksburg, Metallica brought their M72 World Tour, alongside Suicidal Tendencies and Pantera, to a packed Lane Stadium. The setup started days in advance, the buzz building with each passing hour. When those unmistakable opening notes of 'Enter Sandman' ripped through the night, the dream became real. The crowd erupted, jumping in unison for the band itself, live on the very turf that made the song a Hokie legend. And May 7 went down in the Hokie history books as a moment that no one in attendance will ever forget.
Other Team Entrances in College Football 25
EA made the smart choice to play the hits right away with Notre Dame’s entrance. Everything that the game had to hit with Florida, it did. The fans join in on the Gator Chomp as the players take the field. Incorporating Smokey the dog running onto the field, and making him look good, is huge. The only issue is you don’t actually see the separation of the base of the “T” where the players run through. Dubbs II leading the Huskies onto the field looks great. In real life, I actually think this might be the most overrated pre-game ritual in the entire sport. Still, the fireworks over the eternal flame at the Los Angeles Coliseum look like an older video game. What makes Miami’s entrance breathtaking is the orange and green lights shining through the fog machines and the players running out through it. The best part of the entrance is the Cavalier, leading the team on horseback out to the field. This is quite literally the same problem as Virginia. Texas Tech is led out every game by the Masked Raider.

Gameplay Strategies for College Football 25
Be conservative on defense. You should rarely bring more than 5, and even bringing one comes with risk. Force the CPU to dink and dunk down the field. Eventually you'll stone them on a couple runs and either get a sack or force a check down short of the line to gain. Zone coverage is king on CFB 25. Your DBs get burned no matter the leverage you use. Even with inside leverage, they get beat on slants. Only use man coverage as a change up - maybe every 5th or 10th play. On offense focus on the run game, RPOs, and pick a few short/quick pass game concepts that you like. I like mesh, stick, and spacing. Efficiency wins in this game. If you feel like you have enough time to throw, then start going after chunk plays and run play actions except for 2nd or 3rd and long.
