Islamic University of Technology: Courses, Programs, and Achievements

The Islamic University of Technology (IUT), located in Gazipur, Bangladesh, is an international engineering and technology university. IUT was established in 1978 and is operated by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). This article provides an overview of the courses, programs, achievements, and other essential aspects of IUT.

History and Background

The Islamic University of Technology, initially known as the Islamic Centre for Technical, Vocational Training and Research (ICTVTR), was proposed at the 9th Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) in Dakar, Senegal, in 1978. The OIC foreign ministers approved the establishment of IUT in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The infrastructure implementation began with the first Board of Governors meeting in June 1979. President Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh laid the foundation stone on March 27, 1981, in the presence of Yasir Arafat and Habib Chatty. Construction of the campus was completed in 1987 at a cost of US$11 million [US$25 million (2019)].

In 1994, the 22nd ICFM in Casablanca, Morocco, renamed ICTVTR as the Islamic Institute of Technology (IIT). Begum Khaleda Zia, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, formally inaugurated IIT on September 21, 1995. The 28th ICFM in Bamako, Republic of Mali, in 2001, renamed IIT as the Islamic University of Technology (IUT).

Governance and Administration

The Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural, and Social Affairs, comprising all OIC member states, serves as the Joint General Assembly of IUT. This assembly determines the university's general policy, provides guidance, examines activities, and submits recommendations to the ICFM. Internal rules and regulations are shaped through its decisions.

The Joint General Assembly elects the nine members of the Governing Board, including a member from the host country. The Secretary-General of the OIC and the Vice-Chancellor of IUT are ex-officio members. The Governing Board focuses on the activities and programs of IUT and sends recommendations to the Joint General Assembly. It consults on promoting measures and approves curricula for training and research programs.

An interim committee, an organ of the Governing Board, addresses matters between board meetings referred to it by the Vice-Chancellor or delegated by the board. This committee advises the Governing Board on academic matters. Statutory committees manage programs and activities in relevant fields.

Academic Programs

IUT offers undergraduate and graduate programs across six departments under two faculties. The academic year begins in January and consists of two semesters: Winter and Summer. An undergraduate degree requires four years of full-time study, while a master's degree takes two years. The medium of instruction is English.

Admission Requirements

IUT primarily serves students from OIC member states, drawing students from South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Admissions are highly competitive. Students are admitted once per academic year.

  • Undergraduate Admissions: Students from Bangladesh are selected based on a placement test conducted by the university. Thousands of applicants are screened based on their secondary and higher-secondary level results, particularly in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English. Around 160 students are accepted annually into various graduate programs.
  • Postgraduate Admissions: Postgraduate degrees include Master of Science in Engineering, Master of Engineering, and Ph.D. Graduate students are selected by the Post Graduate Committee (PGC) of respective departments. International students are selected by the nominating authority of their respective OIC member state.

Campus Facilities

IUT provides various facilities to support its students' academic and personal development:

Library

The library is located on the first floor of the Library/Cafeteria building and is divided into General and Research/Reference sections. It houses books on engineering, technical, and vocational subjects and subscribes to numerous online and printed technical journals. An automated library circulation system facilitates borrowing books using a bar-code system.

Auditorium

IUT features an air-conditioned multi-purpose auditorium that can accommodate approximately 600 people. It hosts degree/diploma awarding ceremonies, seminars, cultural functions, and examinations.

Halls of Residence

The university has separate halls of residence for male and female students. The North and South Halls are for male students, while the Female Hall is for female students. Rooms are fully furnished and can accommodate up to four students each. A Provost, typically a senior faculty member, serves as the administrative head of each hall.
