Navigating GPA Requirements for University Admissions: A Comprehensive Guide
Gaining admission to a university is a significant milestone, and understanding the Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements is a crucial part of the application process. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of GPA requirements, drawing on examples from institutions like Iowa State University and Illinois State University. It covers various aspects, including general admission criteria, transfer student requirements, and alternative admission pathways.
General Admission Requirements
Iowa State University
Iowa State University operates on a rolling admissions basis, beginning the admission process for the fall semester in July of the preceding year. While Iowa State is test-optional for first-year applicants, GPA remains a key factor in the evaluation. Applicants will be considered for admission based upon their Regent Admission Index (RAI) score, which takes into account GPA, among other factors. Those with an RAI score of at least 245 and who meet the minimum high school course requirements will be automatically offered admission. Applicants who achieve an RAI score below 245 but still meet the minimum high school course requirements may also be considered for admission through an individual academic review of their application materials. For those who choose not to submit an ACT or SAT score, admission will be based on high school GPA and completion of core course requirements.
First-year applicants are not required to submit ACT or SAT scores to be considered for admission. In addition to the high school preparation requirements described above, students applying to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must have completed an additional year of social studies, for a total of three years, and two years of a single foreign language.
Illinois State University
Admission to Illinois State University is competitive, and the university seeks a highly-motivated, academically well-prepared, and diverse student body. Illinois State University requires all students to have a declared major upon completion of 75 hours. Due to this policy, transfer students are encouraged to apply to a major program of study. Applying during the priority filing period is encouraged as the University has the right to limit enrollment due to space availability in major programs and overall student capacity.
Illinois State University regulates admission to designated programs when the number of students seeking admission exceeds the available educational resources of the department or school. *NOTE: All students in the College of Arts and Sciences must satisfy a foreign language graduation requirement that may be met by: 3 years of the same foreign language in high school or completion of the second semester or higher of college-level foreign language with a passing grade or equivalent proficiency as determined by examination. Students who have completed 1 semester of college foreign language credit may elect to satisfy this requirement by studying abroad in an approved program in a non-English speaking country.

GPA for Transfer Students
Iowa State University
Transfer applicants with a minimum of 24 semester hours of graded transferable credit from regionally accredited colleges or universities will be admitted provided they have achieved a minimum 2.25 transfer grade point average (on a 4.00 grading scale) for all college work previously attempted.
Illinois State University
Illinois State University will calculate a cumulative undergraduate grade point average, which will include all courses completed with the exception of developmental (non-credit) coursework. Illinois State generally accepts transfer courses with earned grades of D. However, certain courses in some major programs may require a grade of C or better.
Alternative Admission Pathways
Iowa State University
Applications may be considered from students who did not graduate with their high school classes. Exceptional students may be admitted as full-time students before completing high school.
Illinois State University
All persons 25 years of age or older prior to the first day of class for any given semester, who hold a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma, may be considered for admission as an Adult Learner. Admission as an Adult Learner is an unclassified/non-degree seeking student status. If attendance at a college or university has been within two years of anticipated enrollment, students must submit transcripts indicating a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 on a 4.00 scale and be in good standing at the last school attended.
Additional Considerations
Standardized Tests
Iowa State is test-optional for first-year applicants. Students may choose whether they wish to self-report their ACT/SAT scores when they apply for admission. CLT scores can also be submitted for consideration. Illinois State University hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Illinois State University will submit their scores.

Offers qualified high school students an opportunity to take college-level classes. Dual Enrollment students are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If admitted, they are given unclassified student status and are advised by University College at Illinois State.
