Navigating Dining Options at Ithaca College: A Comprehensive Guide
Ithaca College offers a variety of dining options designed to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of its student body. From traditional dining halls to retail cafes, the college provides multiple avenues for students to access meals and snacks on campus. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the dining landscape at Ithaca College, including meal plans, exchange programs, and recent changes and improvements.
Meal Plans at Ithaca College
Ithaca College requires first-year students and undergraduates living in on-campus residence halls to select from The Residence Plans. Students living in on or off-campus apartments have the option of The Local Plan. These plans are designed to fit every student's active life at Ithaca College. The Residence Plans offer varying numbers of meals per week at any dining location:
- 5 meals per week
- 10 meals per week
- 14 meals per week
In addition to meal swipes, Ithaca College offers Bomber Bucks, which are tax-exempt, cash equivalent dollars loaded onto a student's ID card. These can be spent at any retail location on campus via the GrubHub app. It's important to note that Bomber Bucks expire at the end of each semester. Even if you don't have a meal plan, you can acquire Bomber Bucks. Bomber Bucks purchases can be pre-ordered through the campus Grubhub App.
Students have the flexibility to change their meal plan during the first two weeks of the semester.
The Meal Exchange Program
Ithaca College's meal exchange system allows students to swap a dining hall "meal swipe" for a meal at a campus retail cafe. This program includes Vida Cafe in the Center For Health Sciences, Eleven Wall Cafe in the Park School of Business, Dailies Cafe in the Park Hall School of Communications, or Scribe Cafe in the Gannett Center Library. Retail locations offer a special "Exchange Menu" for students to select from.

The exchange program lets you “swipe” in more places than just the dining hall - 7, 14, or 21 times a week! In essence, you are “exchanging” a swipe at a dining hall for an opportunity to get your “swipe” meal at any five retail eateries across campus using your GrubHub app or café kiosk, and it won’t cost you extra.
Vida Exchange, for example, includes your choice of 24oz Mediterranean-style entrée salad, choice of side, and choice of drink. It is available Monday - Friday: 10:30am - 4pm.
Recent Changes and Challenges in Dining Services
Changes to Ithaca College’s meal exchange system have had some negative consequences. Starting in the Fall 2025 semester, the college relocated many of its meal exchange options. During this commotion and uncertainty, the student body has had to rely on the dining halls.
Sophomore Paige Strickland is frustrated with the situation, especially the dining halls. IC student Paige Strickland would like to see more dining options on campus. The importance of the dining halls has increased since the meal exchanges were altered. However, the menu remains static. The college serves the same things on the same days every week in the dining halls. “It’s just very repetitive after a while.
Reginald Briggs, director of dining at the college, said that the dining halls (CC and Terrace) are on a strict 3-week meal rotation. Briggs mentioned that the dining hall menus rely on a fixed structure due to contracts the college has with various food companies.

Briggs said that before the meal exchange system was implemented in Fall 2023, CC accounted for 68% of the lunchtime meal swipes Monday through Friday.
The exception, Towers Eatery, was shut down because “it wasn’t like we were serving Towers late night… we were literally serving… a dining hall meal,” said Briggs. A new meal exchange, Towers Concourse Market, is set to take its place sometime in October.
Addressing Food Insecurity
Tim Downs, vice president of finance and chief financial officer of the college, brought up the issue of food insecurity for students. Meal exchanges are part of the solution to this problem, as it concerns the college.
The Future of Dining Halls
Downs had an interesting take, saying that dining halls will not exist in 10 to 15 years. “What [students] want is almost like the Chipotle option,” he added.
Terrace Dining Hall: Improvements and Ongoing Issues
Ithaca College’s Terrace Dining Hall has seen some notable changes throughout the 2024-25 school year, with a remodel, and serious improvements in its offerings and events. Positive changes at the Terrace Dining Hall include the new Terrace elevator, the seemingly popular chef showcase dinner nights, the one-day only smoothie bar and the iced tea machines are just some of the recent upgrades from this year.

Despite these enhancements, there are ongoing issues that remain unaddressed. Some examples include removing the second soda machine, malfunctioning drink machines and the pancake maker that has been out of service for months. Dining services continue to spend money on new programs and equipment, and while beneficial, this approach may be unsustainable if core infrastructure remains neglected. Broken equipment not only affects convenience, but also impacts food safety and quality, making timely repairs even more critical.
Financial Transparency and Resource Allocation
Ithaca College’s approved budgets for the recent fiscal years are publicly available, providing transparency in their financial planning. However, specific details regarding the dining services’ budget, particularly allocations for maintenance versus new projects, are not distinctly outlined.
A Call for Prioritizing Maintenance
The recent improvements at Terrace Dining Hall are a step in the right direction, but dining services must shift their focus to maintaining and repairing existing resources. Students and staff deserve functioning equipment and a reliable dining experience, not just some short-lived perks. If Ithaca College dining services truly want to step up their game, they need to invest in fixing what’s already broken.
