Jackson Merrill: From High School Standout to MLB Center Fielder
Jackson Peter Merrill, born on April 19, 2003, is an American professional baseball center fielder currently playing for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball (MLB). Merrill's journey from a promising high school shortstop to an MLB outfielder is a testament to his dedication, athleticism, and adaptability. He was selected by the Padres in the first round of the 2021 MLB draft and made his major league debut in 2024.
Early Life and High School Career
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Josh and Jennie Merrill, Merrill's passion for baseball was evident from a young age. He attended Severna Park High School in Severna Park, MD, where he quickly established himself as a standout player.
As a high school player, Merrill already possessed a large frame and broad shoulders, hinting at excellent physical projection. He recorded a 5.28 second 40-yard dash time, showcasing his speed and athleticism. Primarily a shortstop in high school, Merrill demonstrated soft hands and fluid movements. His actions were low effort, and he possessed a very good feel for the position. Scouts noted his arm strength, recorded up to 79 mph, which played up due to the quickness of his exchanges and release. While his size suggested a potential move to third base in the future, his athleticism, fluidity, and glove work were undeniable.
Merrill distinguished himself as a left-handed hitter with a small leg lift trigger moving forward, a high hand set, and a high back elbow. He consistently got his hands into a good position at the load with present barrel skills, and demonstrated the ability to work both gaps with intent, extending his hands nicely through the swing. While power was projected to improve with additional strength, his hitting ability was already a valuable asset.
Merrill's junior season at Severna Park was unfortunately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of dwelling on the lost season, he focused on physical training, gaining over 30 pounds (14 kg) of muscle, demonstrating his commitment to improvement.

Draft and Minor League Career
The San Diego Padres recognized Merrill's potential and selected him in the first round, with the 27th overall pick, of the 2021 MLB draft. He later signed with the Padres for a reported $1.8 million.
After signing, Merrill began his professional career in the Padres' minor league system. In one of his early appearances, James Wood and Jackson Merrill starred in the California League Opener.
2024: MLB Debut and Postseason Play
Merrill's rapid development led to his inclusion in the Padres' Opening Day roster in 2024. The Padres' No. 12 prospect was set for his MLB debut as an outfielder. At 20 years old, Jackson Merrill made his debut for the Padres in the opener against the Dodgers in Seoul.
Jackson Merrill's incredible 2024 season continued into the postseason.
Playing Style and Strengths
Even from an early age, Merrill felt most comfortable on the baseball field, always striving to become a better teammate and improve his baseball skills. His experiences in baseball instilled in him the importance of teamwork. He believes the true essence of baseball is all individuals doing what one can to better the team to help achieve its goals. Merrill has played with many great teammates who have had more skill than him, but all that does is inspire him to improve on the talents that he has been given. As a 12-year-old at Cooperstown, he proved to himself that he could play with good competition. Each year as the competition has become better, he relies on that experience to spur him on to excel at each level.

In high school, he led both his high school and summer team in hitting (.500 and .418 respectively) as he lead off for both teams. Along with his hitting, his fielding was a valuable asset, as he can play equally well at shortstop and second base.
Academic Pursuits
Merrill's baseball experiences have also helped him in the academic area as he sets goals for himself as well as the field of study he wants to pursue. Those experiences have influenced him to set goals and demonstrate a positive attitude and qualities good leaders possess. He aimed to achieve over a 4.2 GPA throughout his high school career. When not playing sports, mainly baseball, he is doing homework, projects and any other school activities. Participating in the engineering program at Severna Park High School is already preparing him for the next academic level.
