A Mascot's Passion

During a game between Jackson State and Bethune-Cookman, Jackson State quarterback Jalon Jones passed to Warren Newman for a touchdown. After the play, a small fight broke out between players, and Wavee Dave rushed onto the field. As a result, Jackson State was given a 15-yard penalty.

The Embodiment of School Spirit: David “Wavee Dave” Chambers

David “Wavee Dave” Chambers, a 1988 Jackson State University graduate, proudly declared himself "the ultimate Wavee Dave". He felt divinely blessed with a unique talent. For over 20 years, he donned the tiger suit, becoming a symbol of joy and enthusiasm for thousands of JSU fans. Even as his health declined, he continued to bring smiles to the faces of those he represented, proving the passion he held for Jackson State University.

The Baby Tigers: A Legacy of Dance and Service

Under Wavee Dave's leadership, the Baby Tigers were created in the 1990s to engage and excite crowds. Thaddeus Reed was one of the first Baby Tigers. Officially established in 1995 with three dancers, the group grew to twenty-one members, with eight performing at each game. In the early 2000s, female dancers were added. The Baby Tigers maintained a B grade point average and a positive attitude. They performed weekly and hated missing the joy of creating momentum at the games. After David’s passing, his wish was fulfilled to have a Baby Tiger fill his shoes.

Evolution of an Icon: Wavee Dave's Style

Wavee's look has changed throughout the years. Some of his memorable outfits include his sparkling blue vest with a blue and white polka dot bow tie, the black and white tuxedos, and the SWAT vest with army fatigue to name a few.

More Than Just a Mascot: A University Ambassador

Wavee Dave makes appearances at campus events and football and basketball games. The purpose of the Jackson State University Cheerleaders/Tumblers and Tiger Mascot Program is to support intercollegiate athletics & Jackson State University by leading cheers and raising the level of fan support for university athletic teams and to serve as ambassadors of the University. The experiences gained from being a part of this program will not only channel team members’ enthusiasm in a constructive and beneficial manner, but will also give them a sense of pride and accomplishment in being part of a group that is hard-working and respected. Individuals interested in participating on the cheer squad(s) and mascot(s) must audition for the program.
