A Variety of Internship Opportunities
The Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens offers a wide array of internship positions, catering to diverse interests and career aspirations. These unpaid internships are offered in seasonal terms, allowing students to gain experience throughout the year. Applicants are welcome to apply for up to 3 internship opportunities per term, ensuring that each candidate finds the perfect fit.
Animal Care Internships
Animal care internships provide students with the unique chance to work alongside experienced zookeepers. Participants will gain firsthand knowledge of animal behavior, diet preparation, exhibit maintenance, enrichment activities, and general animal care practices. These internships are very physical, requiring candidates to be in good health and capable of handling the demands of the job.

Eligibility and Application Process
Applicants typically need to meet certain eligibility criteria, which may include being enrolled in or recently graduated from a related academic program, possessing relevant coursework, and demonstrating a strong interest in the zoo’s mission. Applicants must be enrolled in or graduated from an associate or bachelor's degree program in a related field. To apply for internships at the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens, interested individuals usually need to submit an application form, resume, cover letter, and possibly letters of recommendation. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review.
Before starting an internship, candidates may be required to complete screenings. If selected for an unpaid internship, there is a $60.00 fee to cover a drug screen, name badge, t-shirt and processing. Interns may be required to complete a drug screen randomly during their internship. Failure to pass this may result in removal from the internship program.
Internships require a 20-40-hour commitment per week for 12 weeks. Each internship area will have different schedule expectations. Please discuss schedule needs during your interview!

Volunteer Opportunities
Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens has a variety of opportunities for individuals who are able to dedicate at least 8 hours per month for a minimum of 6 months.
ZooTeens! is a youth development volunteer program for teens 14-18 years old who are currently completing high school.
Volunteer Groups are always welcome. Groups must have at least 5 people, but no more than 20 to volunteer. Interested in helping with big events like Spooktacular? Want to show off your best acting skills as one of our costumed characters or help to pass candy out to our guests?
