Navigating Knowledge: A Comprehensive Guide to James Madison University Library Resources
James Madison University (JMU) Libraries stand as a cornerstone of academic life, embodying the institution's commitment to innovation, learning, and student success. With a rich history and a forward-looking approach, JMU Libraries offer a vast array of resources, services, and spaces designed to support teaching, learning, creativity, and research. From its humble beginnings in 1905 to the current ambitious renovation of Carrier Library, JMU Libraries have continually evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and faculty.
A Storied Past: The Evolution of JMU Libraries
The journey of JMU Libraries began in 1905, within the Science Hall (now Gabbin Hall), when JMU was known as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg. This initial one-room library, accommodating approximately 40 students, marked the start of a commitment to providing academic resources to the university community.
As the campus expanded, so did the library. In 1915, a larger facility was established in the Students' Building (now Harrison Hall). The completion of Wilson Hall in 1931 allowed the library to occupy the first floor of Harrison Hall, increasing its capacity to about 165 students.
Under the leadership of President Samuel P. Duke, the need for a more substantial library became apparent. A request was made to the state legislature, resulting in the allocation of $140,000 for the construction of a new library. The Madison Memorial Library, now known as Carrier Library, opened its doors in the fall of 1939.
Carrier Library initially accommodated around 350 students. The 1970s brought the first renovations, including air conditioning and improvements to the stacks section. In 1979, President Ronald E. Carrier oversaw a multistory expansion, completed in 1982, which more than doubled the size of the building. In honor of his contributions, the library was renamed Carrier Library. A third floor was added in 1993. In the summer of 2008, East Campus Library was opened, later renamed Rose Library.

The Centennial Fountain, a gift from the Board of Visitors during JMU’s 100th anniversary, was added in 2008. The north-facing side of Carrier Library, after a hiatus, was reopened as an entrance in 2016.
Recognizing the need for an expanded library, the campus master plan in 2017 outlined the vision for the current renovation and expansion. In 2022, the Virginia General Assembly allocated the necessary funds, and the overhaul began promptly after the 2022-23 school year. Carrier Library is scheduled to reopen in Fall 2026.

The Future of JMU Libraries: Innovation and Transformation
JMU Libraries are committed to ongoing innovation and transformation to meet the evolving needs of the university community. The current renovation and expansion of Carrier Library exemplify this commitment, with plans for new, specialized spaces designed to enhance learning.
Carrier Library Renovation and Expansion
The seeds of the current renovation and expansion can be traced back to 2017, when the need for an expanded library was outlined in the campus master plan. Fast forward to 2022 and the Virginia General Assembly allocated the necessary funds to expand Carrier. The overhaul started promptly after the 2022-23 school year ended. Students who returned in August did not find the familiar, welcoming doors of Carrier open. Instead, they encountered the haunting scaffold of a three-story building.
Our precious Carrier will return in Fall 2026 better than ever, boasting many upgrades.
Embracing Technology
JMU Libraries are continuously exploring new technologies to enhance the user experience and provide access to cutting-edge resources. This includes investments in digital collections, online learning platforms, and innovative tools for research and collaboration.
