James Madison University UREC Facilities and Programs: A Comprehensive Guide
James Madison University Recreation (UREC) serves as the central point for physical activity needs on campus. UREC aims to "Motivate Madison into Motion" and empower students to adopt lifelong healthy habits through various recreational programs. More than just a place to exercise, UREC, along with University Park (UPARK), offers a wide array of facilities and programs for the JMU community.
Access and General Information
JMU students and employees automatically have a membership to UREC. When visiting UREC or UPARK, you may be asked to present your valid JACard. UREC staff are available to answer questions, provide directions, explain how to use equipment, and assist with program registration.
Guest Access
Participants with active memberships can host up to two guests per visit at UREC or University Park, for a fee. Daily, weekend, and weekly passes are available for guests. The host must remain with their guest(s) at all times within the facility.
Important Policies
Several policies are in place to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all users:
- UREC is an alcohol, cannabis, and nicotine-free facility. Vaping is also prohibited.
- Participants may not use bikes, skateboards, or scooters inside the facility.
- Metal spikes are not permitted in any facility.
- Glass containers and open flames are prohibited.
- Unauthorized use of any facility is strictly prohibited and is under video surveillance.

General UREC Facilities
- Welcome Center: Located within UREC, the Welcome Center is your go-to resource for information, assistance, and general inquiries. You can also reach them by phone at 540-568-8737.
- Equipment Center: Participants can check out one small towel at a time by swiping their JAC/URAC at the Equipment Center for no fee. Towels can be exchanged during workouts, and it's important to swipe your card again when returning the towel to verify its return.
- Locker Rooms: After entering your combination to unlock the locker, remove your belongings. Please remember which locker and code you use.
Specific Facility Rules and Information
Some facilities have specific rules and guidelines:
- Courts: These courts are specifically for the use of JMU students, faculty, and staff.
- New Facility Opening Fall 2025: Opening in Fall 2025. This is a shared space on campus with JMU Athletics. Use of this facility is by reservation only.
- Room Access: Use the door facing the Quad to enter and exit. Use of this room is not permitted past 11:00 pm.
- Fire Pit: Do not attempt to cook, burn, or put anything inside the fire pit. The emergency shut-off button is to be used during emergencies only.
- Open Recreation Drop-In Hours: The facility is not supervised during open recreation drop-in hours.
