Jasmine Crockett: Education, Early Career, and Rise in Politics
Jasmine Crockett is currently a U.S. Representative for Texas's 30th Congressional District. Beyond her role in Congress, Crockett's journey includes her education, legal career, and prior political service in the Texas House of Representatives.
Background and Education
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Jasmine Felicia Crockett has built a career marked by a commitment to public service and a passion for justice. Crockett earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from Rhodes College in 2003. Later, she pursued law, graduating with a Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center in 2006.
Early Legal Career
After law school, Crockett began her legal career as a public defender in Bowie County, Texas, for three years. This experience exposed her to the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals within the criminal justice system. She focused on defending those most susceptible to exploitation. Crockett later transitioned to personal injury law. In 2010, Crockett formed her own law firm, Crockett Law PLLC, which she operated until 2022.
Entry into Politics
Crockett's entry into politics began with her involvement in the Bowie County Democratic Party, where she served as chair. In 2019, after Eric Johnson vacated his seat in the Texas House to become mayor of Dallas, a special election was held. Crockett challenged Lorraine Birabil in the 2020 Democratic primary, narrowly defeating her in a primary runoff. She advanced to the November 2020 general election, which she won unopposed.
Texas House of Representatives
Elected to the Texas House in 2020, Crockett represented the 100th district. During the 87th Legislative Session, Crockett was the sole Black freshman and the youngest Black lawmaker in Texas. Despite being a freshman representative during the most conservative session in Texas history, Crockett filed more bills than any other freshman. She assembled a wide coalition to pass landmark criminal justice reforms in the House. She also brought more accessibility and accountability to her office. As State Representative, she fought for economic opportunity as a member of the Business & Industry Committee, and advocated for reform on the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee.

U.S. House of Representatives
On November 20, 2021, incumbent Eddie Bernice Johnson announced she would not seek reelection in 2022. Four days later, Crockett declared her candidacy for the seat. Crockett assumed office on January 3, 2023, succeeding Eddie Bernice Johnson as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 30th congressional district. This district, a majority-minority district based in Dallas, had been represented by Johnson for 30 years.
In the 118th Congress, Crockett was elected as Freshman Leadership Representative. In the 119th Congress, she was appointed to the position of Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight. She currently serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. She was also appointed as Communications Task Force Co-Chair for the Democratic Women's Caucus.
Political positions and advocacy
Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is an unabashed progressive, a member of the House Democratic leadership, and one of the most fiercely vocal supporters of civil liberties and racial justice. She has become an internet and social media sensation for her viral sparring matches with Republican colleagues and her relentless questioning of witnesses. She fights for issues important to her, and one of those issues is the right for all students to have access to the higher education setting of their choice, including for-profit career schools. A member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Crockett has been labeled as a progressive Democrat.
As a congresswoman, Jasmine Crockett has purposefully made every decision with one goal in mind: protecting the civil liberties of those in underrepresented communities. Personal Attributes and Approach
Many of Crockett’s Texarkana friends and acquaintances say they were not surprised that the young lawyer they met two decades ago has risen to such political prominence. Charlotte Bradley first met Crockett when the young lawyer asked to volunteer through the local Delta Sigma Theta chapter, a historically African American sorority that Crockett is a part of, which Bradley chaired. The two volunteered on voter registration drives, at church and with United Way. “She’s able to fit into any particular environment,” Bradley said.
