Jaycee Horn: From South Carolina Gamecock to NFL Star

Jaycee Carrington Horn, born on November 26, 1999, is a prominent American football cornerback currently playing for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL). Before making his mark in the NFL, Horn honed his skills playing college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks. Horn's journey to the NFL began at Alpharetta High School in Alpharetta, Georgia, where he showcased his talent as a defensive back.

High School Career

At Alpharetta High School, Jaycee Horn quickly established himself as a formidable defensive player. As a senior, he recorded 44 tackles and five interceptions, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing offenses and make game-changing plays. His performance earned him recognition as one of the top cornerback prospects in the nation.

College Career at South Carolina

Freshman Year (2018)

As a true freshman defensive back, Horn appeared in 11 games, starting in 10 of them. He received recognition on the 247Sports midseason true freshman All-America team and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team by the league’s coaches. Sophomore Year (2019)

During his sophomore year, Horn started all 12 games at cornerback. He recorded 40 tackles, led the team with nine pass breakups, and forced two fumbles. In the season opener, he had five tackles, two forced fumbles, a sack, and a pass breakup.

Junior Year (2020)

As a junior, Horn earned second-team All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches and third-team honors from Pro Football Focus. He started each of the first seven games at cornerback, recording 16 tackles. Horn led the team with eight passes defended, including six pass breakups and two interceptions, averaging 1.14 passes defended per game, which was second in the SEC. He had a standout performance against Auburn, recording three tackles, two interceptions, and four pass breakups, earning Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and SEC Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Following the dismissal of head coach Will Muschamp, Horn opted out of the season’s final three games to focus on the NFL draft.

Leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft, Jaycee Horn was highly regarded by analysts and scouts. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the second-best cornerback in the draft (18th overall) on their big board. Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked him as the third-best cornerback prospect, while NFL analysts Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah, along with Lorenz Leinweber of Sports Illustrated, ranked him as the second-best cornerback in the draft. Mel Kiper Jr. also acknowledged Horn's potential as a top prospect.

NFL Career with the Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers selected Jaycee Horn in the first round (8th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft, making him the first cornerback and defensive back to be drafted that year. On June 15, 2021, Horn signed a fully guaranteed four-year, $21.11 million contract with the Panthers, which included an initial signing bonus of $12.71 million.

2021 Season

Throughout training camp, Horn competed for a starting cornerback position against veterans Donte Jackson and A. J. Bouye. He made his professional regular-season debut on September 12, 2021, in the Carolina Panthers' home opener against the New York Jets, recording a season-high three combined tackles (two solo) in a 19-14 victory. On September 19, 2021, Horn had one pass deflection and made his first career interception on a pass thrown by Jameis Winston. Unfortunately, his season was cut short due to a foot injury sustained on September 23, 2021, during a game against the Houston Texans, leading to him being placed on injured reserve.

2022 Season

In 2022, Horn entered training camp competing for the No. 1 starting cornerback role against Donte Jackson and C. J. Henderson. He was named the No. 1 starting cornerback by Head Coach Matt Rhule. On September 25, 2022, Horn intercepted a pass thrown by Jameis Winston, also recording a season-high three pass deflections. He was inactive for two games due to a rib injury. In Week 14, he intercepted a pass by Geno Smith, also collecting a season-high six combined tackles. He suffered an injury while tackling Josh Reynolds during a game against the Detroit Lions.

2023 Season

In 2023, the Carolina Panthers hired Frank Reich as their new head coach. Defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero named Horn and Donte Jackson the starting cornerbacks. Horn's season was again impacted by injury, as he was placed on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury sustained in the season opener. He was activated off of injured reserve on December 2, 2023.

2024 Season

In 2024, Dave Canales was hired as the new head coach, and he retained Ejiro Evero as defensive coordinator. Canales named Horn the No. 1 cornerback. Horn recorded a season-high eight combined tackles in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals. He also recorded his first career sack against Patrick Mahomes during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Horn missed the last two games of the season due to a hip injury, finishing the season with a career-high 68 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, two sacks, and one interception.

2025 Season

On March 10, 2025, the Panthers signed CB Jaycee Horn to a four-year, $100 million contract extension.

Personal Life

Jaycee Horn's father, Joe Horn, had a successful career as a wide receiver in the NFL. He is also the brother of former NFL wide receiver Joe Horn Jr.
