Jaylin Davies: From Mater Dei to Oklahoma State via UCLA

Jaylin Davies, a highly sought-after defensive back, has navigated a path through prominent college football programs, showcasing his talent and versatility. From his early days as a four-star recruit to his recent commitment to Oklahoma State, Davies' journey reflects his determination and potential impact on the field.

High School Career and Recruitment

Davies established himself as a top prospect at Mater Dei High School, a renowned football powerhouse. His performance earned him a four-star rating from both ESPN and 247Sports, solidifying his status as one of the nation's top recruits. Davies' abilities and potential attracted attention from numerous prestigious programs, including Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, USC, and Florida State. Ultimately, he chose to begin his college career with the Oregon Ducks. He was listed as the No. 152 player in the country in 247Sports’ Composite ranking. An Under Armor All-American.

Oregon Ducks (2021)

Davies' time with the Oregon Ducks was brief. In 2021, as a freshman, he participated in just three games, accumulating 20 snaps at cornerback. During this limited action, Davies recorded two tackles and one stop. In coverage, he did not register any pass breakups or interceptions, and his quarterback rating when targeted was 81.3. After the end of the season he transferred to UCLA.

UCLA Bruins (2022-2024)

Davies transferred to UCLA, where he spent the next three seasons further developing his skills and contributing to the Bruins' defense.

2022 Season

In 2022, as a sophomore, Davies appeared in 12 games, playing a total of 376 snaps. He recorded 24 tackles, six assists, and six stops. In coverage, he had two pass breakups and two interceptions, with a quarterback rating when targeted of 96.6.

2023 Season

As a junior in 2023, Davies played in 12 games, increasing his playing time to 520 snaps. He tallied 31 tackles, six assists, and 12 stops. During the 2023 season he ended up making a career-high 43 total tackles to go with a tackle for loss, an interception and a career-high six PBUs.

2024 Season

He played in all 12 of UCLA’s games this past season, making eight starts. In 2024, he had 30 tackles, a tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

Performance Analysis

Davies demonstrates good instincts and anticipation, allowing him to read and react with discipline. He is particularly aware in the red zone, positioning himself to defend against fade throws. However, scouts have noted that he sometimes gives too much cushion when playing off his man, which is further complicated by his lack of willingness as a tackler. Additionally, he may lack the timed speed necessary to consistently mirror and maintain contact with receivers downfield, particularly against NFL-caliber opponents. The majority of the time last season, Davies was able to physically overwhelm opposing receivers early in the down, a scenario that won’t play out as often against NFL receivers. Davies tracks the ball well and does a nice job of getting his head around in plenty of time to avoid flags.

Transfer to Oklahoma State

After four seasons of college football (one at Oregon and the past three at UCLA), Davies has recorded 108 tackles, two tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Oklahoma State Cowboys secured a commitment from Davies, addressing their defensive needs through the transfer portal. Davies, a redshirt senior, brings experience and potential to the Cowboys' secondary. His commitment followed a visit to Stillwater, where he was impressed by the program and coaching staff. Davies also announced offers from Nebraska, Northwestern and Mississippi State. Davies becomes the sixth DB to transfer to Stillwater, joining two traditional portal transfers and three players from the junior college ranks.

Skills and Potential

Davies possesses a range of skills that make him a valuable asset to any defense. He demonstrates good instincts and anticipation, allowing him to read and react with discipline. His awareness in the red zone is particularly noteworthy, as he effectively defends against fade throws.
