Remembering Sergeant Jeremy Cole: A Legacy of Service and Dedication at Endicott College
The Endicott College community is in mourning following the tragic loss of Police Sergeant Jeremy Cole, who passed away in a car accident on Thanksgiving morning. Sgt. Cole, a 15-year veteran of the Campus Public Safety and Police Department, was known for his unwavering commitment to student safety and well-being. His sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, both on and off campus.
A Heartfelt Loss
Endicott College officials expressed their deep sorrow at the news of Cole's passing, acknowledging the profound impact he had on the community. "Jeremy’s kindness, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to our community will never be forgotten," the college said.
The Incident
Sergeant Cole was driving home from his evening shift on campus early Thursday morning when his Chevrolet Trailblazer was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver on I-95 north in Newbury. According to a statement from Endicott College Chief of Police Kerry Ramsdell, the incident occurred shortly before midnight. New Hampshire State Police had reported a Tesla driving the wrong way into Massachusetts on I-95 around midnight on Wednesday. State troopers monitored the vehicle as law enforcement prepared a tire-deflation device in Georgetown. However, before the Tesla reached the device, it collided with Cole’s vehicle.
The Aftermath
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles, requiring a "lengthy and delicate extrication process" by firefighters. Cole, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Tesla’s operator sustained serious injuries and was transported to a Boston hospital. An investigation into the crash is underway. The driver, Keoma Duarte of New Bedford, pled guilty to motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, and other charges at a virtual arraignment in Newburyport District Court on Tuesday.
A Protector and Caretaker
Affectionately known as “JCole” by students, Sgt. Cole was more than just a police officer; he was a protector and caretaker on campus. "Sergeant Cole exemplified what it meant to be dedicated to and embedded in the community he served," Billerica Police said in a statement. His dedication extended beyond his official duties, creating a sense of security and trust among the students he served.

In 2021, Cole received a Lifesaving Award for performing CPR to save the life of an individual on a softball field on campus. This act of bravery, along with Endicott Officer Sean Gannon, was recognized by the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. According to Endicott College President Steven R. DiSalvo, "This act of bravery was just one example of the selflessness and care that defined Jeremy's service to Endicott."
Community Support and Condolences
The news of Sgt. Cole's passing has been met with an outpouring of support from the community. More than a dozen local police departments expressed their condolences. "On this Thanksgiving Day, our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of a police officer who reported for duty keeping the rest of us safe and secure but did not return home,” Ramsdell said.
