Locations and Timing
Internships are available in both the Washington, D.C. office and the district offices located in Bridgeport and Stamford, Connecticut. Interns are accepted throughout the year on both a full-time and part-time basis in the Bridgeport and Stamford offices. The office is currently accepting applications for the spring cohort. District spring internships will begin on Monday, January 12, 2026 and end on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Summer internships have two cohorts and are only available for Washington, D.C.
Eligibility and Application Process
Priority is given to applicants from Connecticut's 4th Congressional District, although all interested persons are encouraged to apply. The Washington, D.C. internships are open to undergraduate- and graduate-level students as well as recent graduates.
The selection process is based on a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant's qualifications, including general office and computer experience, performance during the interview, and the quality of a submitted writing sample.

To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, resume, and a brief one to three-page writing sample with the internship application.

Responsibilities of Interns
Interns undertake a variety of responsibilities, encompassing both administrative and legislative tasks. These responsibilities provide practical work experience in the office. In the Bridgeport and Stamford District Offices, interns conduct research, assist with constituent casework, and draft correspondence. Interns also assist with answering phones, data entry, and general office systems operations. As an intern, Mughal will assist with constituent communications and work on staff projects. Additionally, she will attend press briefings and prepare memoranda for the Congressional staff.
Financial Assistance: Stipends and Scholarships
Recognizing the importance of removing financial barriers for potential interns, Congressman Himes' office offers need-based stipends to eligible applicants.
Applicants for summer internships in DC and/or in Connecticut with demonstrated financial need are encouraged to apply for the Kevin J. Sutherland Scholarship.

In honor of Kevin Joseph Sutherland, a Connecticut native dedicated to public service, the Office of Congressman Himes names one applicant the “Kevin J. Sutherland Scholar.” This distinction offers the successful candidate a three-month summer internship in Washington, D.C. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need. A former intern in Congressman Himes’ Washington, D.C. office, Sutherland exemplified a commitment to advancing policies that would positively impact people’s lives.
The Jack Bryant Stipend
In recognition of Jack Bryant’s public service, the Office of Congressman Himes offers one intern candidate a $5,400 stipend and a three-month summer internship in our District Offices. Jack Bryant was a community leader whose activism and dedication to his beloved city of Stamford stood as a model of how to be an engaged citizen and good neighbor. Beloved deacon, past President of Stamford’s NAACP Chapter, and Stamford Board of Education Member, Bryant died due to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020.
A Glimpse into Intern Experiences
Sophia Mughal, a political science and religious studies double major, exemplifies the kind of driven student who benefits from this internship. In 2021, she interned for Himes in his Bridgeport office. Mughal hopes to pursue a career in public service, specifically looking to work on Capitol Hill or in public policy. “This experience in Congressman Himes’ Office will help me hone my skills in the political arena and allow me to spend my time and efforts serving the people of my home district,” shares Mughal. Mughal's experience underscores the value of the internship in shaping future public servants. “Classes I have taken in the Political Science Department have given me a better understanding of the American political process that will aid me in this internship,” shares Mughal, of Fairfield, Conn. In her hometown, Mughal has served as the Head of Policy and Research for the Fairfield Equity Coalition, an organization dedicated to promoting equity and anti-racism within Fairfield public schools and the wider Fairfield community. On campus, Mughal serves as president of William Smith Congress, a Community Assistant, co-captain of the William Smith Club Ice Hockey team and a Writing Colleague.
