Jinnah Sindh Medical University: A Comprehensive Overview

Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) stands as a prominent institution dedicated to health sciences education in Pakistan. History and Establishment

Jinnah Sindh Medical University جناح سنڌ ميڊيڪل يونيورسٽي, formerly known as Sindh Medical College, has a rich history. Sindh Medical College was established on April 7, 1973, after approval of a committee constituted by the Government of Sindh. Approximately 200 students were admitted to their first year of MBBS in 1973. Khawaja Moin Ahmed was appointed as the first principal of the college. Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) was officially established on June 1, 2012. Its constituent medical college was Sindh Medical College (SMC) which was already a reputable institution of the province since its establishment in 1973. In 2003, Sindh Medical College became a part of the Dow University of Health Sciences. This transformation marked a significant step in the institution's development, allowing it to expand its programs and enhance its research capabilities.

Mission and Vision

JSMU has a mission to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of the communities it serves. Educating students and participation being noble human in the community is a core principal of Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) mission. The University’s teaching and research activities are firmly based on the community model of engagement. Its research and community engagement activities focus on effective solutions to problems faced by the people it serves. As a part of our mission we believe the learning that takes place in our classrooms and clinics must be put and applied into the deprived community of Pakistan. JSMU is working towards the vision of a modern university at par with international standards by emphasizing e-learning and developing technology-based teaching and learning initiatives.

Academic Programs and Institutes

JSMU offers a range of programs in medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences. The university comprises of several major institutes:

  3. APPNA Institute of Public Health (AIPH)
  4. Institute of Health and Business Management (IOHBM)

Since then, the JMSU has established Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, APPNA Institute of Public Health, Institute of Health and Business Management and Social Sciences, Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences and the new Institute of Nursing and Institute of Physical Rehabilitation. The total enrolment of medical and dental students exceeds 6,000, making it the largest medical university in Sindh. Along these academic institutions, we have three teaching hospitals for clinical training of our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Constituent and Affiliated Institutions

Prestigious national institutions like the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and National Institute of Child Health (NICH) are the constituent clinical institutes of the university. University students receive clinical training in prestigious national institutions like the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), National Institute of Child Health (NICH), and National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD). There are 14 medical and dental Colleges affiliated with JSMU since 2014-15.

Faculty and Staff

JSMU is distinguished by the quality of its individuals and their commitment to modernizing and updating its curricula and facilities. Highly seasoned faculty and staff run its constituent medical college and institutes. Each year, we graduate hundreds of students skilled in the health and its allied professions but we extended our mission emphasis towards community services beyond our goals. Department/institutes of JSMU involve in instructional and professional dedicated health service activities by the faculty and staff with individual and world renowned organizations.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Jinnah Sindh Medical University runs one of the largest Public Health Awareness programs in Pakistan. Across the university, faculty, students and alumni are embedded in JSMU and its allied institutes, neighborhoods, youth organizations, health services groups, advocacy groups, city district government, community leadership programs for more just an equitable life opportunities for all Pakistanis.

JSMU Health Awareness Program of Pakistan

Under the JSMU Health Awareness Program of Pakistan, the university students volunteer and reach out to the people of Pakistan at their homes, schools and, market places, in person and through print and electronic means of mass communication. On the festive occasion of EID every year, the students of the university volunteer and spread out to the underprivileged children of Pakistan at various orphanages, pediatric hospitals, and the children workplaces. Our students distribute educational material among the children, spend time with the sick, and enlighten them about the benefits of education.

Collaborative Projects

Johns Hopkin Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (Jhpiego)project based working on new born and child health care, reproductive and public health for the achievement of millennium development goal for the reducing maternal and child mortality. The Health Foundation, Health Education and Literacy Programs (HELP), United Nation Population Fund, Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS), Shine Humanity.

Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences (SIOHS) Community Outreach

Sindh Institute of Oral Health Sciences (SIOHS) community outreach and services encompasses various fields which shown its vital interest for the awareness of dental base oral hygiene. More than twenty outreach oral health awareness sessions were conducted to enhance the dental students experiences and provide cheap or free dental care to low income families which includes examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions and root canals at various places including JSMU dental clinic like Frobel Education Center, Deaf reached children, Ujala Center for Handicap children, ACELP institute, street children, St. Joseph School, St. Paul School, Coast guard School, Nasra School, St. Andrew School, St. Michel School, Pakistan Coast Guard School, DA Model High School, Street School Abdullah Shah Ghazi, Bazm-e-Kiran, Kashif Iqbal Thalassemia Center and Beacon House School. Blood donation event was conducted in collaboration with Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation. Awareness Seminars were organized for community on child sexual abuse, Psychiatric illness, epilepsy, and Basic Life Support Session.

National Institute of Child Health (NICH)

National Institute of Child Health (NICH) is a 500 bedded hospital which provides FREE OF COST treatment to hundreds of thousands of patients every year. It is one of the largest and the only children hospital of the province of Sindh. It serves patients primarily from all over Sindh and Baluchistan, being the only such free facility available to them in this entire region.

Research and Innovation

JSMU will encourage Translational research which will benefit Pakistan specific health problems, epidemiological issues, inter family marriages. The following data gives a quick reading on the scientific performance in the last years. The research ranking refers to the volume, impact and quality of the institution's research output. The innovation ranking is calculated on the number of patent applications of the institution and the citations that its research output receives from patents. E-Learning Initiatives

The University offers e-learning courses with currently 166 courses online for its students in affiliated colleges and has trained 110 faculty members in creating e-learning material. It was also the first public sector university in Pakistan to provide free wi-fi facility to students and faculty.

With a global rank of 8489 and a score of 35.49, the university is committed to providing quality education and fostering research in health-related fields.
