Johan Norberg: Education, Career, and Contributions to Classical Liberalism
Johan Norberg, born in 1973, is a Swedish author and historian of ideas known for his work promoting economic globalization and classical liberal perspectives. His career spans various roles, including author, filmmaker, and senior fellow at multiple think tanks, allowing him to contribute significantly to discussions on human progress, globalization, and intellectual history.
Early Life and Education
Born in Stockholm to Erik Norberg, a former Swedish National Archivist, and his wife, Birgitta, Johan Norberg spent his childhood in Hässelby, a suburb in western Stockholm. During his high school years, he identified as an "anti-industrial anarchist," but he later shifted his views, embracing classical liberalism. This transformation stemmed from his belief that classical liberalism "took freedom seriously."
From 1992 to 1999, Norberg pursued higher education at Stockholm University, ultimately earning an M.A. in the history of ideas. His academic pursuits also included studying philosophy, literature, and political science.
Career Beginnings and Rise to Prominence
Norberg's career took a significant turn in 1997 when he was invited by Timbro, a Swedish liberal think tank, to write a book about the Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg. The resulting book, Motståndsmannen Vilhelm Moberg, was a commercial and critical success, sparking debate and paving the way for Norberg to write another book on the history of Swedish liberalism.
Den svenska liberalismens historia was another success, leading Norberg to join Timbro's permanent staff in 1999. He served as the assistant editor-in-chief of the webzine Smedjan.com from 1999 to 2002. He actively participated in debates against the Swedish anti-globalization movement, culminating in the publication of In Defense of Global Capitalism (Till världskapitalismens försvar in Swedish) in May 2001. In this book, he laid out his arguments in favor of globalization and free trade.

Recognition and Continued Work
In Defense of Global Capitalism garnered international recognition, receiving the Sir Antony Fisher International Memorial Award from the Atlas Economic Research Foundation in 2002. In 2003, Norberg was awarded the gold medal of the German Hayek Stiftung, an honor previously bestowed upon figures like Margaret Thatcher and Otmar Issing.
From 2002 to 2005, Norberg served as the head of political ideas at Timbro. Since March 15, 2007, he has held the position of Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. He is also a member of the Mont Pelerin Society, an international organization of classical liberals.
Beyond his affiliation with the Cato Institute, Johan Norberg is a Senior Fellow at ECIPE and the Brussels-based Centre for the New Europe.
Contributions to Understanding Russian Military Affairs
Johan Norberg is also a Senior Fellow in FPRI’s Eurasia Program. He is an expert on Russian military affairs, holding the position of Senior Military Analyst at Sweden’s Defense Research Agency (FOI) for 24 years. His work at FOI involves examining developments in the Russian Armed Forces. He has also worked at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and in the Swedish Parliament and served in Peace Support Operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia, and the Middle East.
