A History of Baseball at John Carroll University

John Carroll University, founded in 1886 by the Society of Jesus, is a private, selective, coeducational, residential liberal arts university. Representing 36 states and 15 countries, the undergraduate enrollment is 2,615. The Blue Streaks compete in 24 sports and have a history of athletic success. John Carroll has won 12 Ohio Athletic Conference men’s all-sports trophies, including the past eight in a row; the Blue Streaks women have finished within the top half of the conference in each of the past 11 years. John Carroll re-joined the OAC in 1989 after a stint from 1932-1949. They were also a founding member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. Recently, John Carroll joined eight other NCAA Division III institutions spanning Ohio and Indiana as full-time members of the NCAC family.

The Early Years and Gerald J. Schweickert's Impact

Gerald J. Schweickert, a Chicago native who enrolled at John Carroll in 1955, significantly shaped the university's athletic landscape. Schweickert played multiple positions for the Blue Streaks football team, including quarterback, running back, and defensive back. He also handled punting, kick returns, and placekicking duties.

Schweickert's most enduring contribution was founding the John Carroll baseball team. He served as its head coach from 1973 to 1976 and again from 1979 to 1995. During his tenure, Schweickert led the Blue Streaks to eight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) titles and an appearance in the 1984 NCAA Division III baseball tournament. His achievements led to his induction into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame in 1968. In recognition of his impact, the university named the Gerald J. Schweickert Outstanding Achievement Award in Athletics and Schweickert Field in his honor.

After a period from 1932-1949, John Carroll re-joined the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in 1989. More recently, John Carroll joined the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The NCAC was founded in 1983 based upon the principles of a strong commitment to equality, a firm belief in a broad-based athletic program as part of an institutions’ greater academic mission and a reliance on mutual trust and presidential leadership. The NCAC also includes four field hockey affiliate members in Indiana, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania: Allegheny College (Meadville, PA), Earlham College (Richmond, IN), Transylvania University (Lexington, KY), and Washington & Jefferson College (Washington, PA).
