John Metchie: From College Standout to NFL Hopeful
John Metchie III, a Taiwanese-Canadian professional football wide receiver and kickoff returner for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL), has had a remarkable journey. His path to professional football began in Taiwan and Ghana, took him through Canada and the United States, and culminated in a successful college career at the University of Alabama. This article explores Metchie's college statistics, his development as a player, and his transition to the NFL.
Early Life and High School Career
Born in Taipei, Taiwan, on July 18, 2000, Metchie's family moved to Accra, Ghana, when he was one year old. At the age of six, his family relocated to Brampton, Ontario, Canada, where he was introduced to football. He then moved to the United States to attend St. James High School in Maryland. He also spent some time at The Peddie Prep School in Hightown, New Jersey. Metchie finished his high school career with impressive stats: over 1,300 rushing yards, 2,500 receiving yards, and 42 total touchdowns. As a four-star recruit, he received more than 20 offers from college programs.
College Career at Alabama
Metchie arrived at the University of Alabama in 2019. Initially, he found himself behind a number of talented receivers, including Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Devonta Smith, and Jaylen Waddle. With Ruggs and Jeudy departing for the NFL and Waddle suffering a significant ankle injury four games into the 2020 season, Metchie's opportunity arose.
2020 Season: Stepping into the Spotlight
In 2020, Metchie took full advantage of his increased role, recording 55 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns. He also contributed 81 yards in the team’s National Championship win over Ohio State. His performance earned him the Jon Cornish Trophy, awarded to the best college football player from Canada. During the season, Metchie demonstrated his ability to be productive, catching 70 percent of his targets at 11.6 yards per target and scoring six touchdowns on 55 catches.
2021 Season: Leading Receiver
With Smith and Waddle out of the picture in 2021, Metchie became the Crimson Tide's leading receiver, catching 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a significant ACL injury sustained during Alabama's SEC Championship Game victory over Georgia. Despite the injury, Metchie decided to forgo his remaining college eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Before the ACL injury, questions lingered about Metchie's speed and overall athleticism. However, his strengths as a receiver were evident. He is an experienced route runner who consistently creates separation and gains significant yardage after the catch. Metchie has proven his ability to command targets and be productive while playing alongside other talented receivers like Devonta Smith in 2020 and Jameson Williams in 2021.
NFL Draft and Career
Metchie was projected as a day two pick in the NFL Draft and was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. Unfortunately, his career faced an unexpected challenge when he was diagnosed with leukemia in July 2022. After undergoing treatment, Metchie made a remarkable recovery and returned to the field.
Houston Texans
Metchie's resilience was recognized when he was named the Texans' Ed Block Courage Award winner. He also received the PFWA 2024 George Halas Award. He scored his first career touchdown after his cancer battle.
Trade to Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets
Metchie was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. Subsequently, the New York Jets acquired Metchie from the Eagles.
