Payment Options and Requirements for International Medical Students

International medical students who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents and students not in possession of immigrant visas will be obligated to satisfy the School of Medicine’s international medical student financial requirement. This amount is non-negotiable and can be satisfied with cash, a non-negotiable irrevocable Letter of Credit (LOC) in the name of The Johns Hopkins University, a combination of cash and LOC, or a Letter of Guarantee (LOG) issued in the name of The Johns Hopkins University and authorized by an appropriate embassy or government official from your home country. Additional Expenses

Beyond tuition, international students should budget for the following:

Books and Supplies: Estimated at $1,367 per year.

Health Insurance: Health insurance is required for all students. The cost for the student health insurance plan is automatically included in your bill, though you may waive it if you have adequate coverage through your family or another source. International students with an F1/J1 visa status cannot waive coverage.

Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Tuition and Fees

For students enrolled in Advanced Academic Programs (AAP):

A $75 application fee is assessed upon submission of an application to any AAP program.
Tuition is calculated on a per-course basis and rates vary by program.
Full course tuition is due at the time of registration.
All fully online and blended courses in AAP require an additional technology fee.
Students who are in a thesis course and do not finish the thesis in the semester in which they enrolled for it must pay a continuation-of-enrollment fee of $500 for each subsequent semester/term until a final grade has been submitted. This fee also allows students to continue using university facilities such as libraries, and the Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory (JHED).
The Late Registration period is defined as the seven days prior to the start of classes and requires a $150 fee.
Every graduate needs to pay the graduation fee, regardless of whether or not they plan to attend the ceremony. The graduation fee is $100 and is payable upon receipt of a bill from the Student Accounts office.

Engineering for Professionals Tuition

The typical tuition rates for Engineering for Professionals courses during the 2025-2026 academic year, after the Dean’s support is applied, are $1,475 for undergraduate (200-level) and $5,455 for graduate (600-level and higher) courses.

Per-course tuition for a three-credit graduate-level course in the Whiting School of Engineering is $6,670, but with support from the dean of the Whiting School of Engineering, our students enjoy a substantially decreased out-of-pocket cost.

Cost of Attendance Components

The Cost of Attendance (COA) includes both direct costs, which are expenses you’ll see on your bill, like tuition, your dorm room, and your meal plan, as well as indirect expenses, which are things that you won’t be billed for, but that we know you’ll have to pay for in addition to your bill. It’s important to remember that your COA is an estimate, not an exact number. While we know how much your direct expenses will be, there’s no way for us to know exactly how much you’ll spend on things like textbooks or personal expenses during the year, so those figures are based on how much the average student generally spends. Your COA will vary depending on whether you live on or off campus. The COA for on-campus students includes the cost of a double room and a meal plan, while the COA for off-campus students includes an estimate for rent, utilities, and groceries over the nine months of the fall and spring semesters.
