Joshua Uche: From Michigan Wolverine to NFL Linebacker

Joshua Ikechukwu Uche, born on September 18, 1998, is an American professional football linebacker. He played college football for the Michigan Wolverines and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is currently a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Early Years at Michigan

Uche's journey at the University of Michigan wasn't immediately smooth. As a freshman in 2016, he faced setbacks with a torn meniscus and a virus, limiting his appearances to just four games. The following year, as a sophomore, a stress fracture further hampered his playing time, restricting him to only 10 games.

Frustration mounted for Uche after the 2017 season due to a lack of playing time. He felt "useless" and questioned if Michigan was the right fit for him. He expressed his desire to contribute and help the team win, which fueled his frustration.

Turning Point

Uche met with defensive coordinator Don Brown to express his frustration and seek more playing time in 2018. Brown challenged him to "go earn it." This encounter proved to be a turning point in Uche's college career.

Breakout Junior Season

As a junior in 2018, Uche finally got his chance to shine, appearing in 12 games at linebacker. He made a significant impact, recording eight tackles for loss and leading the team with seven sacks. His performance earned him recognition, with the Detroit Free Press calling him "the most surprising player on the nation's top-ranked defense." Head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Uche's determination and motivation.

Continued Success in 2019

Uche continued his impressive performance in the 2019 season, recording a career-high 34 tackles, including 23 solo stops. He led the team with 8.5 sacks, which was tied for 14th-most in a single season in Michigan program history, and his 11.5 tackles for loss were second-most on the team. Following the season, Uche was named to the 2019 All-Big Ten defensive second-team by the coaches.
