Joyce Edwards: The Ascent of a College Basketball Star

Joyce Edwards, a name rapidly gaining recognition in women's college basketball, has become a prominent figure in the sport. Her journey, marked by significant achievements and unwavering dedication, showcases her exceptional talent and potential. This article delves into Edwards' career, highlighting her accomplishments, recruitment, and impact on the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Early Career and Recruitment

Joyce Edwards, born on January 30, 2006, is an American college basketball player for South Carolina. Edwards attended Camden High School. During her junior year she averaged 28.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.9 assists and led Camden to the 3A state championship. Edwards was considered a five-star recruit and the number two player in the 2024 class, according to ESPN. On November 15, 2023, she signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play college basketball at South Carolina, over offers from LSU and Clemson. She was the highest-rated player from South Carolina since A'ja Wilson was No.

Edwards' decision to commit to South Carolina was influenced by several factors, including a conversation with WNBA star A'ja Wilson. Wilson's advice and the opportunity to play for her home state team played a crucial role in Edwards' choice. South Carolina's coaching staff, led by Dawn Staley, also played a significant role in her recruitment, ensuring that Edwards could pursue her academic interests while excelling in basketball.

Despite interest from other top programs, including LSU and Clemson, Edwards chose to stay in South Carolina. Staley worked with the university’s honors college to ensure that she could get the right degree.

Freshman Year Impact

Edwards made an immediate impact during her freshman year with the Gamecocks. On November 28, 2024, against Iowa State, Edwards scored 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. She was subsequently named the SEC Freshman of the Week for the week ending December 3, 2024. During her freshman year, she led South Carolina in scoring, and averaged 13.0 points per game in conference play. Her .558 field goal percentage ranked fourth in the SEC. She was the Gamecocks' leading scorer in a team-high 13 games, including seven against ranked opponents. Following the season she earned first-team All-SEC and SEC all-freshman team honors.

International Experience

Edwards has also represented the United States in international competitions. Edwards represented the United States at the 2023 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup, where she was the youngest member on the roster. During the tournament she averaged 12.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in seven games. On May 19, 2024, Edwards was named to team USA's roster for the 2024 FIBA Under-18 Women's AmeriCup. During the tournament she led team USA in scoring, and ranked fourth overall in the tournament, with 14.2 points per game. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds and 2 steals in six games. During the final against Canada she recorded 16 points, a team-high 13 rebounds and five steals for her second double-double of the tournament to help the United States win a gold medal. On June 19, 2025, Edwards was named to team USA's roster for the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup.

Breakout Sophomore Season

South Carolina women’s basketball sophomore Joyce Edwards has been one of the 2025-2026 season’s biggest breakout stars. That might seem like hyperbole, as she earned first-team All-SEC honors last year. As Edwards has taken a huge step forward, she has turned into one of college basketball’s top scorers. Making her ability to put the ball through the hoop that much more impressive, she has played the second-fewest minutes of any of the other top-10 scorers. Edwards’ most recent games have been her best. She has scored at least 25 points in her last four times on the court. That is the first time a Gamecock has accomplished that since Shannon Johnson about 30 years ago. Defensively, she is one of 17 players in the country to average at least 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks. Despite playing with elite rebounder Madina Okot, Edwards is averaging 6.2 boards, too. Though the Gamecocks have several big-time guards who can facilitate the basketball, Edwards has done a good job as a secondary and tertiary creator this season.

South Carolina star forward Joyce Edwards joined a group of historic Gamecocks. The sophomore scored her 1,000th career point with a free throw in the third quarter of No. 3 South Carolina’s 88-45 win over Mississippi State at home. Edwards finished with 21 points, bringing her career total to 1,003 points. She reached 1,000 points in just 64 games, making her the fifth-fastest player to accomplish the feat in South Carolina women’s basketball program history. That’s notably faster than Gamecock greats Sheila Foster (68 games) and A’ja Wilson (69 games) who both happen to have their jerseys retired (and a statute in front of Colonial Life Arena, in Wilson’s case).

Edwards has played dominant offense all season long for the Gamecocks. She came into Thursday averaging career highs in field goal percentage (59.9%), effective field goal percentage (60.2%), total rebounds (6.4) and assists (2.5). She led the team in scoring last year with just 12.7 points and leads the team again this year with 20.3 points per game. If Edwards finishes the year averaging at least 20 points per game, she’d be the first to do so since Wilson did in the 2017-18 season. Edwards is the 40th Gamecock to score at least 1,000 points in their career.

The next career scoring mark for Edwards is 1,500 career points. The last Gamecock to achieve that feat was Zia Cookie.
