Karson Gordon: From Quarterback to Track Star at UCLA
Karson Gordon, a true freshman at UCLA, has quickly become a noteworthy figure, not only for his athletic versatility but also for his early impact on the university's track and field program. While initially recruited as a three-star quarterback, Gordon's trajectory has taken an interesting turn, showcasing his talents in both football and track and field.
Transition to Wide Receiver
Gordon, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 171 pounds, has been observed practicing with the wide receivers, suggesting a potential position switch. According to David Woods of 247Sports.com, Gordon is "repping with wideouts." This transition could provide Gordon with a more viable path to playing time, considering the depth chart at the quarterback position. While it remains to be seen whether Gordon can carve out a role in the Bruins' receiver room, this move presents a clearer opportunity for him to get on the field.
Triumphs in Track and Field
Despite not yet seeing game action with the UCLA football team, Gordon has already made a significant impact on the school's men's track and field program. He etched his name in program history by winning the men's triple jump at the Spokane Showcase. His remarkable jump of 15.82 meters ranks as the fifth-best mark in UCLA men's track and field history.
High School Accolades
Before arriving at UCLA, Gordon was a standout athlete at Episcopal High School in Missouri City, Texas. His accomplishments in track and field are particularly noteworthy. In 2023, he was named the Texas Gatorade Boys Track & Field Player of the Year. That same year, he clinched the Southwest Prep Conference triple jump championship. The preceding year, he finished fourth in the triple jump at the Texas 6A state track and field championships.
Recognition as a "Freak" Athlete
Gordon's exceptional athletic abilities were recognized nationally. He had been ranked No. 44 on 247Sports' "2024 Freaks List," when he was initially committed to UNLV. Andrew Ivins of 247Sports highlighted the difficulty of qualifying for state-level track and field competitions in Texas, emphasizing that being named the state's Gatorade Boys Track & Field Player of the Year is a testament to exceptional talent. Ivins described Gordon as a "Freak," noting that his personal-best mark of 51 feet, 5 3/4 inches in the triple jump was the best among all prep athletes nationally in 2023.
