From Hilltopper to Defensive Line Mentor: Martin's Early Career
Martin's football career began as a four-year letterman at Western Kentucky, where he played defensive line from 2009 to 2012. During this time, he started in 42 games and was a part of the Hilltoppers' inaugural FBS bowl team, which competed in the 2012 Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl. After graduating from Western Kentucky in 2012, Martin embarked on his coaching career, starting as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at his alma mater, Ocoee High School, in Orlando in 2013. Meanwhile Martin’s charges helped UCF reach the nine-victory mark for a second consecutive year as the Knights advanced to the AAC Championship Game for the first time in four years and qualified for a bowl game for the seventh straight season.

Martin has continued his track record of developing individual talent at UCF. Veteran Anthony Montalvo, with his extensive career starts, added experience to the defensive line. Ricky Barber earned honorable mention All-America honors from Pro Football Network and was a first-team All-American Athletic Conference pick. In 2023, Lee Hunter claimed honorable mention All-Big 12 Conference recognition after making more regular-season tackles (64, including 10.5 tackles for loss) than any defensive tackle in the nation, according to Pro Football Focus. UCF also received key assistance at tackle from true freshman John Walker, who added 24 tackles (five for loss).
In 2024, Hunter was named a second team All-Big 12 selection after tallying 45 tackles with 9.5 tackles for loss. According to Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) advanced metrics, Hunter graded out at 77.0, which was the second best in the Big 12 for a defensive tackle and ranked among the nation’s best. Barber had a stellar final year for the Knights and received consideration for the conference's defensive lineman of the year award. He had 34 tackles, including six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Bowl Game Appearance
As a coach at UCF, Martin helped the team participate in the 2021 Gasparilla Bowl, where they triumphed over Florida.
