Navigating Kentucky Merit Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide
Kentucky offers a variety of merit-based scholarships to reward students for their academic achievements and potential. These scholarships can significantly reduce the cost of higher education, making college more accessible and affordable. University of Kentucky Academic Scholarships

Academic-Based Scholarships
These scholarships are based on academic credentials on file in Admissions, pending early application and availability of funds. To be considered for an academic scholarship, the completed admission application and high school transcript must be received by December 1, 2016, and qualifying test scores must be received by January 15.
- Provost Scholarship: Incoming Kentucky resident freshmen with a minimum ACT score of 26 or SAT (M+CR) of 1170, and a 3.30 unweighted high school GPA, will be considered.
- "See Blue." Scholarship: Incoming non-resident freshmen with a minimum ACT score of 25 or SAT (M+CR) of 1130, and a 3.00 unweighted high school GPA, will be considered.
- Bluegrass Spirit Scholarship: Incoming non-resident freshmen with a minimum ACT score of 25 or SAT (M+CR) of 1130, and a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA, will be considered.
- Kentucky Heritage Scholarship: Incoming non-resident freshmen with a minimum ACT score of 30 or SAT (M+CR) of 1330, and a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA, will be considered.
Patterson Scholarship
National Merit® or Hispanic® Finalists who designate UK as their college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by mid-April are eligible for the Patterson Scholarship. This scholarship is in addition to the UK National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship of $2,000, awarded through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The Patterson Scholarship is a renewable scholarship providing the cost of tuition and an allowance for room and board. No scholarship application is required. If a student is awarded a Singletary Scholarship, that award will replace the Patterson Scholarship.
Governor's Scholars/School for the Arts Scholarships
The University of Kentucky offers special scholarships to students that complete the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars and/or Governor’s School for the Arts summer programs. These scholarships are for incoming freshmen only.

- Presidential Scholarship: GSP/GSA students applying with a minimum test score of 31 ACT or 1360 SAT (M+CR) and minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale will receive a Presidential Scholarship, which provides in-state tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study, provided the student is admitted and has the qualifying test score and GPA on file with the Office of Undergraduate Admission by January 15.
- Provost Scholarship: All other eligible GSP/GSA students will receive a Provost Scholarship, which provides $1,500 per year, for up to four years of undergraduate study, provided the student is admitted by January 15. If a student is awarded a Singletary or Patterson Scholarship, that award will replace the Provost Scholarship.
Minimum test score requirements are based on the composite or total score from one test date. Combined scores, also known as a superscore, from two or more tests will not be considered. After January 15, GSP/GSA students are still encouraged to apply to the University but scholarship opportunities may be limited.
William C. Parker Scholarship
The William C. Parker Scholarship is awarded based on a holistic review of the student’s application for admission with the goal of supporting student success. All incoming first-time freshmen with a minimum unweighted high school GPA of 2.50 will be considered. No additional steps are required to apply for the Parker Scholarship. For maximum consideration, apply by the Early Action deadline of December 1, 2025. Because of the number of admissions applicants, not all students who meet the GPA requirement will be selected for a Parker Scholarship.
Departmental Scholarships
Several colleges and departments at UK administer their own scholarship programs. Students who have chosen an academic program are encouraged to contact their college/department regarding scholarship opportunities, as requirements vary. Some UK colleges are now utilizing Scholarship Universe for departmental scholarship applications, but students should check with their respective college regarding their specific scholarship procedures and deadlines.
Scholarship Universe (SU)
Scholarship Universe (SU) is an online scholarship platform that matches students to relevant, vetted external scholarship opportunities, as well as internal scholarships offered by the university. SU is available for currently enrolled UK students and admitted prospective students who have a Link Blue account. Students can log in to complete the student profile and search and apply for external and internal scholarship opportunities. Some UK colleges are now utilizing Scholarship Universe for departmental scholarship applications, but please check with your respective college regarding their specific scholarship procedures and deadlines.
Murray State University Academic Scholarships
Murray State University also provides academic achievement scholarships to reward students for their hard work and achievements.

Academic Achievement Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded upon admission and range from $1,000 to $10,000. To maintain eligibility, a minimum GPA of 2.75 is required. These scholarships cannot be combined with Presidential Fellowships or the Marvin D. Mills Scholarship. The scholarship is renewable for up to four consecutive years while enrolled at Murray State or until the bachelor's degree is obtained, whichever occurs first.
Presidential Fellowships
Presidential Fellowships are awarded to high-achieving students and cover the cost of tuition, on-campus housing (double-occupancy rate), and a meal plan. These fellowships are eligible for renewal. Selection involves a competition, including interviews in February, and participation in Honors Day as part of Admitted Student Weekend, including the University’s Honors College.
Marvin D. Mills Scholarship
The Marvin D. Mills Scholarship amounts range from $2,000 to $6,000 annually and can be used toward any direct cost, including non-penalty fees. There are two tiers:
- $2000 annually can pay toward any direct cost, non-penalty fees.
- $6,000 annually - can pay toward any direct cost, non-penalty fees.
These scholarships cannot be combined with Presidential Fellowships.
Other Opportunities
Murray State alumni may be eligible for tuition at the in-state rate. Additional scholarships may be available for meals, books, etc.

Kentucky Wesleyan College Academic Scholarships
Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC) recognizes and rewards students' hard work and achievements through generous scholarships and financial aid. Every new undergraduate student, whether from Kentucky or across the globe, is automatically considered for an academic merit scholarship upon admission to KWC. These scholarships apply toward tuition for up to eight semesters in a full-time undergraduate program (12 or more credit hours each semester).
Merit-Based Scholarships
KWC offers several merit-based scholarships based on high school cumulative GPA:
- Full-Tuition Scholarship Competition: Students with a High School Cumulative GPA of 3.8 or greater will be invited to possibly earn a full-tuition scholarship.
- Winchester Scholarship Competition: Students who are Winchester Scholarship recipients will be invited to compete for a full-tuition scholarship.
- GPA-Based Awards: Scholarships are also awarded based on GPA ranges:
- High School Cumulative GPA 3.4 to 3.59
- High School Cumulative GPA 3.2 to 3.39
- High School Cumulative GPA 3.0 to 3.19
- High School Cumulative GPA 2.6 to 2.99
- High School Cumulative GPA 2.59 or less
To maintain these scholarships, students must maintain a minimum GPA (varying by scholarship type) with at least 24 credit hours per year. If the GPA falls below the minimum, the scholarship may be reduced or rescinded.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities at Kentucky Wesleyan College
- Athletic Scholarships: Determined by each Coach in his/her sport. No application is necessary.
- Talent Scholarships: Awarded in the areas of art, band, education, campus ministries, music, and theatre. No application is needed.
- Faith-Based Leadership Scholarship: A renewable scholarship available to eligible faith-based students who have an interest in serving in a leadership role in campus ministries.
- United Methodist Scholarship: Must be a member of a United Methodist congregation and have a High School Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 with an involvement expectation with campus ministries. - Legacy Scholarships: Awarded to students who are the children or grandchildren of Kentucky Wesleyan College alumni. Also awarded to students who have a sibling currently attending. No application necessary.
- Teacher Education Program Scholarship: For first-year students entering the Teacher Education Program at KWC with at least a High School Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. No application necessary.
- Woodward Scholarship: established a special scholarship to honor their CEO, Mr. Terry Woodward. No application necessary.
- Robert C. Henson Scholarship: For first-year pre-med students with a B average from high school majoring in biology or chemistry. No application necessary.

Tuition Remission for Faculty/Staff Dependents
Dependents and spouses of full-time or part-time Kentucky Wesleyan College faculty and staff may receive tuition remission for up to 100 percent of the cost of tuition after one year of full-time, continuous service. This will replace all other KWC scholarships awarded since it is full-tuition, and the total dollar amount of all scholarships combined cannot exceed the total amount of direct KWC costs. However, outside scholarships can be applied toward room and meal plans. An institutional non-need-based program designed to pay part or all the cost of tuition for qualifying students. Dependents and spouses of full-time or part-time Kentucky Wesleyan College faculty and staff and CIC member institutions may receive tuition remission for up to 100 percent of the cost of tuition after one year of full-time service. This will replace all other KWC scholarships awarded since it is full-tuition and the total dollar amount of all scholarships combined cannot exceed the total amount of direct KWC costs. However, outside scholarships can be applied toward room and meal plans.
CIC Tuition Exchange Program
The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is a non-profit organization. Kentucky Wesleyan has been a member since 1975. The purpose of the CIC Tuition Exchange is to benefit the children of faculty and staff at member colleges and universities across the country by offering tuition scholarships.
Scholarships for Transfer Students at Kentucky Wesleyan College
At Kentucky Wesleyan College, hard work should be rewarded. Every new transfer student-domestic or international-is automatically considered for a merit scholarship when admitted to KWC. If a GPA improves after the final semester, simply send the updated transcript to the admissions counselor. These scholarships are applied toward tuition for up to eight semesters in a full-time undergraduate program (12 or more credit hours each semester). Independence Bank Scholarships

Northern Kentucky University (NKU)
