Kevin Hart: From Class Clown to Media Mogul - A Journey Through Education, Comedy, and Philanthropy
Kevin Darnell Hart, born on July 6, 1979, is an American comedian, actor, and media mogul whose journey from a challenging childhood in Philadelphia to international stardom is a testament to his resilience, ambition, and dedication to personal growth and giving back. Hart's story is not just about comedy and acting; it's a narrative interwoven with themes of education, self-improvement, and a commitment to uplifting others.
Early Life and the Spark of Comedy
Growing up in Philadelphia, Hart faced early challenges. He was raised by his single mother, Nancy Hart, and had a father who was often in and out of prison due to drug-related issues. In his early years, Kevin never really knew his father, because his parents divorced when he was six. Hart took it upon himself to make his mother’s life better. He was never a good student, but he figured he could at least make her laugh. He found solace and a sense of purpose in humor, using it as a coping mechanism and a way to bring joy to his mother. "There was such a negative cloud over my home, that when I got to see what laughter did it made me want to embody that," Kevin told Tony Robbins. "I wanted to bring that - not just to my household, but to people. I became the class clown. I became the funny guy day in, day out to my mother.” This early exposure to the power of laughter ignited a passion within him, setting the stage for his future career.
Kevin Hart knew comedy was his calling after watching Eddie Murphy’s Delirious stand-up video. The dream gave him hope when his cocaine-addicted father was in prison. It was the last thing he thought about before going to sleep in the hallway of his mother’s run-down, one-bedroom apartment in Philadelphia. It kept him sane when he was selling shoes.
Education and a Pact with Mom
Hart's mother, Nancy, a strong advocate for education, instilled in him the importance of knowledge and continuous self-improvement. “Our biggest fights came with me not wanting to learn,” he said. “As I got older, I started to find my way, to become an individual who realized the power of the thing that was preached to me so much - which was knowledge and information. So the thing that I’ve taken from my mom is that feeling of never being content, never being okay with where you are because after every level is another level whether you realize it or not.”
When he was 18, Kevin made a deal with his mom, a strict, no-nonsense woman who believed in bettering herself through education. She wanted Kevin to stay in school. He wanted a career in standup. They agreed he’d try comedy for one year and she’d help him financially. If Kevin couldn’t make a living after 12 months, he’d do things her way. After high school, Hart briefly attended the Community College of Philadelphia.

Early Stand-Up Struggles and the Road to Success
Hart's journey into stand-up comedy wasn't without its challenges. His first performance at a drop-in improv night was a disaster: “I had jokes prepared. They just weren’t good jokes,” he recalled. “But what I didn’t have was fear… The silence didn’t deter me from wanting to be a comedian.” He faced numerous rejections and even experienced the humiliation of being booed off stage. After stumbling through his first comedy routines in New York City, Kevin realized that performing was more than telling jokes. It was about connecting with the audience so he began sharing his life’s ups and downs - like what it's like having a chicken wing thrown at him for telling a bad joke. "It hit me right here, with the sauce dripping from my face," the comedian said, poking his cheek before pointing to the floor.
After those initial unsuccessful shows, he began entering comedy competitions throughout Massachusetts, with audience receptions eventually improving. In his early career, he underwent his fair amount of struggle and criticism, but after dedicated practice and performance, he quit his salesman job to fully pursue comedy. Hart's comedic reputation continued to grow with the release of his first stand-up album I'm a Grown Little Man (2009). He has since released four more comedy albums: Seriously Funny (2010), Laugh at My Pain (2011), Let Me Explain (2013), and What Now?
Breakthrough Roles and Film Career
After a year, Kevin was winning comedy competitions and his reputation was growing beyond New York. His breakthrough came when he was cast in a recurring role on the TV series Undeclared (2001). That was followed by film roles in Paper Soldiers (2002), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Soul Plane (2004) and In the Mix (2005). Hart concurrently gained prominence for his acting career, which notably included appearances in installments of the Scary Movie franchise and in movies such as "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" (2005), "Little Fockers" (2010), and "Think Like a Man" (2012). "Laugh at My Pain" and Comedy Tours
Hart's comedy tours began in 2009 with his act titled I'm a Grown Little Man, followed by Seriously Funny in 2010, Laugh at My Pain in 2011, and Let Me Explain in 2013, the last two of which were also released as features in theaters. On April 9, 2015, Hart embarked on a comedy world tour titled the What Now? Tour at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, which concluded on August 7, 2016, at the Columbus Civic Center in Columbus, Georgia. On July 16, 2015, Universal Pictures announced that Kevin Hart: What Now?, a stand-up comedy film featuring a performance of Hart's What Now?
Real Husbands of Hollywood
In 2013, Hart co-created Real Husbands of Hollywood with Chris Spencer. The show follows Hart along with other married celebrities (each playing a comical fictionalized version of themselves) within the series including: Boris Kodjoe, Nelly, Duane Martin, J.B. Smoove, Nick Cannon and Robin Thicke. Thicke did not return for the second season due to his music career, though Hart has stated that the door is open for him to return. The series is filmed in a style similar to Bravo's The Real Housewives. Episodes often hinge on the "real" Hart's desperately unsuccessful attempts to climb Hollywood's celebrity social ladder (which always backfire in humiliating ways), and the character's barely-hidden envy of his more successful celebrity friends.

Hosting and Other Ventures
In addition to acting, Hart has also hosted various ceremonies. On December 4, 2018, Hart was announced as the host of the 2019 Academy Awards. Two days later, however, he withdrew from hosting duties in the wake of backlash against him over several homophobic tweets he had posted between 2010 and 2011. He characterized the protest as unconstructive and argued, "If you don't believe people change, grow as they get older, I don't know what to tell you". As Chocolate Droppa, his alias, he signed to Motown Records and released Kevin Hart: What Now? An avid poker player since around 2010, Hart has entered major tournaments such as the World Series of Poker, cashing in one event for $4,783 in 2014. He also plays cash games, like the ones organized by PokerStars, and became their Brand Ambassador in 2017.
The Loss of His Mother
Kevin’s mother still hadn’t seen any of his stand-up performances when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006 and given 30 days to live. She was a religious woman who preferred reading the bible to being around alcohol, cigarettes, and New York City.
Kevin understood. She’d paid his rent during the first, precarious 12 months of his career. He knew he had her support but had no idea just how much until her death when he found a box of clippings and memorabilia from all of his shows in her apartment - every flier, ad, and newspaper review. Nancy Hart had followed his career intensely. “While she wasn’t present, she was aware,” he recalled. “Now, as I achieved success, I don’t feel ‘Damn, I wish my mother was here to see it.’’ I - 100 percent - know she’s witnessing it at the highest level. And that there is constant applause and a pat on the back.”
Lessons from Mom
Kevin’s mother had instilled in him her drive and ambition to build a better life and some of the lessons she taught him became more meaningful after her death: “Information is free, that’s what she used to say.” Nancy was forever taking classes and striving to achieve more, so Kevin began studying the business he was in. Not content with just being a successful actor and comedian, he became a producer and an author. In February 2018, Hart's Laugh Out Loud Radio premiered on SiriusXM, with Kevin hosting Straight From The Hart with friends and comedians.

More marathon challenges are planned across the US, combining his passion for fitness and philanthropy.
Since 2014, Kevin has raised funds for cancer charities with his annual Hartbeat weekend concert and partnered with Laugh Out Loud and Sam’s Club Deliver to raise $500,000 in donations for families in need.
