Kobe Hudson: From UCF Standout to NFL Prospect

Kobe Hudson, a wide receiver from the University of Central Florida (UCF), has transitioned from a high school quarterback in Georgia to a promising NFL prospect. His journey, marked by transfers and evolving skill sets, has culminated in an opportunity to impress scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Early Years and High School Success

Born and raised in Georgia, Kobe Hudson first gained recognition as a four-star recruit. After an impressive junior season, he was named the Class 4A state player of the year. During that season, he recorded 3,386 passing yards and 38 touchdowns through the air, in addition to 1,410 rushing yards and 18 scores on the ground. His athletic abilities earned him a spot in the prestigious All-American Bowl, which ultimately led him to Auburn for his collegiate career.

College Career: Auburn and UCF

Hudson's college career began at Auburn, where he played in 2020 and 2021. As a true freshman in 2020, he recorded seven receptions for 70 yards. In 2021, he emerged as Auburn's leading receiver with 44 receptions for 580 yards and four touchdowns. After the season, he transferred to UCF, reuniting with his former Auburn coach, Gus Malzahn. Hudson said he was "kicked off" the Auburn football team.

In his first year at UCF, Hudson started 10 of 12 games, recording 39 receptions for 641 yards and seven touchdowns. In his final two seasons, he amassed 91 receptions for 1,670 yards and 12 touchdowns, earning back-to-back Honorable Mention All-Conference selections.

Performance at UCF

The move to the Big 12 did not slow his progression. His performance at TCU propelled UCF to a critical Big 12 Conference opener victory. He also delivered consistently with seven-catch outings against both Cincinnati and Utah down the stretch.

His 2024 season particularly showcased his reliability and big-play ability as he started all 12 games, leading the Knights with 47 receptions for 770 yards and four scores.

Vertical Production and Big-Play Ability

Hudson's vertical production consistently hovered around the 16-20 yard mark, highlighted by his breakout 2023 season where he ranked fourth in the Big 12 and seventh nationally with 20.45 yards per reception. Even in 2024, he remained among the conference's most dangerous deep threats, averaging 16.38 yards per reception (seventh-best in the Big 12) while logging three 100+ yard performances.

NFL Scouting Combine Performance

Kobe Hudson received an invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine, calling it a "blessing." The combine provided Hudson with a platform to showcase his skills and athleticism to NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers. He was the fourth and final Knights player to compete at the combine, following defensive backs BJ Adams and Mac McWilliams, and running back RJ Harvey.

Combine Measurables

Here's a breakdown of Hudson's on-field measurements at the combine:

  • Height: 6'0¾"
  • Weight: 193 lbs
  • Arm length: 30⅝"
  • Hand size: 9"
  • Vertical jump: 35"
  • Broad jump: 10'2"

Hudson's athletic metrics predominantly ranked around the middle of the pack, relative to the rest of the draft-hopeful receivers. NFL Next Gen Stats' Combine IQ issued Hudson an "average" draft score of 67, factoring in his athleticism and production - 2,961 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns across parts of five seasons at Auburn and UCF.

40-Yard Dash Time

Hudson's top effort in the 40-yard dash was officially marked at 4.57 seconds, tied for 32nd among the 39 wideouts that ran Saturday.

Positional Drills

It was during positional drills where Hudson shined, in particular, Saturday. He caught every ball in a clean run through the gauntlet, and secured a post pass - extending his hands away from his body without breaking stride - from Missouri quarterback Brady Cook.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

His clear strength lies in his ability to win downfield, where his tracking skills and body control allow him to make plays most receivers simply cannot. The film consistently shows a wideout who understands how to defeat press coverage with sudden releases and stack corners vertically - creating legitimate big-play potential that will intrigue NFL evaluators. His background as a former quarterback manifests in how he reads coverages and manipulates defenders throughout his routes. While his 4.57 forty time won't scare anyone, his functional game speed and deceptive route pacing regularly put him in position to make some plays downfield. In a league that increasingly values explosive gains, Hudson brings a skill set that creates chunk plays without needing elite athleticism. Effort and attitude are also strengths.

Weaknesses

According to NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, “[Hudson] can make challenging catches but struggles with focus drops”. The flashes of brilliance when working downfield (particularly on posts and deep crossers) contrast sharply with his frustrating concentration lapses on routine catches.

NFL Outlook

While Hudson had arguably the most clutch offensive play of the year for UCF in a touchdown catch that defeated the TCU Horned Frogs on the road, he has at times had baffling drops on easier plays.

Hudson will need to lean heavily on his intermediate and deep route prowess while continuing to develop consistency in the short game. His path forward involves mastering a specific route tree rather than becoming an all-around technician.

Hudson’s 40-yard dash time of 4.57 seconds at the NFL combine wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t enough to make him jump off the page into a candidacy for a first or second-day NFL draft pick. Other elements in his scouting report may further impact him more negatively.

Whether he is a late selection or an undrafted free agent, there’s a high probability that Hudson will make his way onto a team as a special-teams contributor with preseason reps during an NFL training camp.

Professional Career

Kobe Hudson is an American professional football wide receiver for the Houston Gamblers of the United Football League (UFL).
