Kyungpook National University: A Comprehensive Overview
Kyungpook National University (KNU), abbreviated as KNU or Kyungdae (경대), stands as one of the ten Flagship Korean National Universities representing Gyeongbuk Province in South Korea. Established in 1946, KNU is a premier public research-intensive institution. The university is located in Daegu, Korea's fourth-largest city, KNU emerged from the amalgamation of several regional colleges and has developed into a comprehensive university.
Historical Development
The medical school of Kyungpook National University began in 1923. Kyungpook National University was founded in September 1946 by upgrading the Colleges of Education, Medicine, and Agriculture in Daegu to a National College. In October 1951, the Colleges of Education, Medicine, Agriculture, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Law and Political Sciences were combined into Kyungpook National University. Other departments, including Engineering and Dentistry, were established sequentially, forming the university as it is known today.
Academics and Structure
Today, it comprises 22 colleges and 14 graduate schools dispersed across three main campuses, serving more than 24,000 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate students. As of October 2019, the University has 17 colleges, 2 independent departments and 12 graduate schools with 30,719 students enrolled in undergraduate programs, 6,603 on graduate programs, plus 3,230 professors and 463 administrative staff. Integrated with Kyungpook National University in 2010, the Sangju Campus includes two colleges, 19 departments, and various graduate schools. Located in central Daegu, this campus houses the medical, nursing, and dental schools.
KNU offers a diverse range of academic programs and cutting-edge research facilities.
Leadership
The university has two vice presidents: Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Shi-Chul Lee, Vice President for Research & University-Industry Cooperation(Soonki Jung). Additionally, there are about ten deans overseeing various administrative areas, including Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Strategy & Finance, Research & Industry Collaboration, International Affairs, Admissions, External Cooperation, Information & Technology, Education Reform, and Graduate School Policy.
