La Bodega Baja Taco Bar: A College Station Favorite Returns

After a decade-long absence, La Bodega Baja Taco Bar has made a triumphant return to College Station, much to the delight of its loyal fans and new customers alike. Balloons decorated the entrance of La Bodega Baja Taco Bar to celebrate the restaurants return to College Station on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024. The reopening of La Bodega in August 2024 has brought back the beloved Mexican martini shakers, homemade strawberry tart, and habanero shrimp tacos that College Station residents have missed.

A Nostalgic Comeback

Owner Costa Dallis expressed the enduring desire to revive La Bodega, stating, "We always felt like we wanted to reopen it, but we just didn’t really pursue it aggressively, and then an opportunity came with this space down here in south College Station." The original La Bodega, known for its "small, old and funky building with low ceilings," had a strong college-oriented following. Dallis noted that many of the restaurant's original patrons, "were the people that were in A&M 10 to 15 years ago that are now parents and have their own families." This nostalgia factor has undoubtedly contributed to the excitement surrounding the reopening.

The return of La Bodega evokes fond memories for many. As one online commenter shared, "When my wife and I were newly married and broke, [La] Bodega was our special ‘eat out’ place." Another reminisced, "One of my old roommates in 2012 used to work at [La] Bodega, so we went a lot." The restaurant holds a special place in the hearts of those who frequented it in its earlier days.

Location and Atmosphere

The new La Bodega Baja Taco Bar is located in south College Station. Dallis explained how the new space influenced the restaurant's design, noting, "Every space is different. This one you can see all the windows and has a ton of daylight. The other one had really low ceilings. There’s an older, funkier building, so it kind of tailor the look of the restaurant to the space that you’re in." The new iteration has the addition of a drive thru. The restaurant features colors and framed pictures from the original location, creating a familiar yet updated ambiance. The atmosphere is generally described as vibrant, with both indoor and outdoor seating options available. Customers can enjoy a relaxed setting where laughter flows as freely as the conversation.

The Menu: Old Favorites and New Additions

La Bodega's menu is a blend of cherished classics and exciting new offerings. Owner Costa Dallis emphasized the commitment to honoring the original restaurant, stating, "We honored the old menu. There’s probably 80 to 85 percent of the old menu still intact, we just added some more." This ensures that longtime fans can still enjoy their favorite dishes while also discovering new culinary delights.

Just because we are in South CS doesn't mean we won't want to sell to the masses. We hope to have a little something for everyone."
