LaMonica R. McIver has dedicated her life to public service, demonstrating a strong commitment to her community and a passion for addressing the challenges faced by New Jersey residents. Early Life and Education

Born on June 20, 1986, in Newark, New Jersey, LaMonica McIver is the oldest of four children. Growing up in the city's Central Ward, she experienced firsthand the challenges and opportunities within her community. McIver graduated from Central High School in 2004. Overcoming personal challenges, including her mother's struggle with substance abuse, McIver became the first in her family to attend college. She earned a degree in English Literature from Bloomfield College and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from Seton Hall University. Her academic achievements laid the groundwork for her future career in education and public service.

Early Career and Community Involvement

Prior to entering politics, McIver worked as a personnel director for Montclair Public Schools and as a public affairs manager for Newark's Public Service Enterprise Group. These roles allowed her to develop valuable skills in leadership, management, and community engagement. McIver's commitment to empowering young women led her to co-found Newark G.A.L.S., a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering leadership skills in young women and girls. She was also actively involved with the Believe in Newark Foundation, further demonstrating her dedication to community development. Her early immersion in politics began at the age of 10, when she first mobilized other youth and highlighted the importance of civic engagement. Ras Baraka, who later became the Mayor of Newark, was her fifth-grade teacher, and McIver's interest in politics grew as she helped with his campaign for city council.

Entry into Politics: Newark Municipal Council

McIver's political career began with her election to the Newark Municipal Council in 2018. At the time, she was the youngest woman ever elected to the council. Representing the Central Ward, she championed the needs and aspirations of her constituents, focusing on issues such as clean water initiatives and climate resilience. As a council member, McIver played a key role in replacing 18,000 lead lines in the city’s water system, addressing a critical public health concern. She proudly served on the council for six years, serving three as council president. In July 2022, McIver was elected Newark Council President. She stepped down from her position as Newark Council President on September 17, 2024, to focus on her congressional bid.

Election to the U.S. House of Representatives

Following the death of Donald Payne Jr., who represented New Jersey's 10th congressional district, McIver announced her candidacy in the special election to fill the seat in May 2024. She secured the Democratic Party primary election in July and won the general election in September. McIver was sworn into Congress on September 23, 2024, assuming office and stepping into the role previously held by Donald Payne Jr. McIver's election to the House of Representatives marked a significant milestone in her career, providing her with a platform to address the challenges facing her district and advocate for policies that benefit her constituents.

She worked for many years in the educational sector, most recently as Executive Director for Essex Regional Educational Services Commission.

McIver has been actively involved in legislative action and oversight, including performing an oversight visit at an ICE detention facility in Newark on May 9, 2025. During this visit, an incident occurred involving Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who was later arrested for trespassing. McIver and others attempted to protect Baraka from arrest. In response to the incident at the ICE detention facility, McIver stated, "We were fulfilling our lawful oversight responsibilities, as members of Congress have done many times before, and our visit should have been peaceful and short. Instead, ICE agents created an unnecessary and unsafe confrontation when they chose to arrest Mayor Baraka."

Committee Assignments

McIver has expressed interest in serving on several committees, including the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She recognizes the importance of investing in infrastructure to improve the movement of goods and people, citing the recent improvements at Newark Airport's Terminal A as an example of successful infrastructure investment.

Challenges and Controversies

McIver's career has not been without its challenges. In June 2025, she was indicted for allegedly impeding law enforcement during the incident at the ICE detention facility. McIver has rejected a plea deal and denies any wrongdoing. She pleaded not guilty to assault charges stemming from the immigration center visit.
