Vincent DeRubeis: Overcoming Adversity to Join the Savannah Bananas
Former Lander University outfielder-first baseman Vincent DeRubeis, who transferred to Lander from the University of Bridgeport after COVID, joined the Bananas in 2023. While batting in a game for the Lander Bearcats on a rainy afternoon in April 2022, the slugging outfielder swung at a high two-seamer up and in that he fouled straight into his left eye.
Despite losing sight in his left eye due to a baseball injury, former Lander outfielder Vincent DeRubeis displayed remarkable resilience and determination. With the support of Lander hitting coach Ricky Santiago, DeRubeis worked tirelessly to regain his hitting form. His perseverance caught the attention of Jesse Cole, owner of the Savannah Bananas, who invited him to a tryout. DeRubeis's passion and talent earned him a spot on the Bananas' 2023 roster, where he became an inspiration to fans and fellow players alike.

Lander University played a pivotal role in the inception of Banana Ball, an innovative and entertaining form of baseball created by the Savannah Bananas. On November 2, 2018, Lander University hosted the first-ever Banana Ball game, an exhibition match between the Lander Bearcats and the Savannah Bananas.
Bananas’ owner Jesse Cole played for Lander Coach Jason Burke at Wofford College. Coach Burke said his former ball player called him and Wofford coach Todd Interdonato (now at Boston College) about playing exhibition games to introduce a fast-paced style of baseball with some crazy rules. “My team was fired up and excited about the game and thought it was the coolest thing ever,” Burke said.
Banana Ball's unique rules, designed to create a fast-paced and engaging experience for fans, have garnered widespread attention. The games are limited to two hours. Instead of runs, a point is awarded to the highest-scoring team each inning. There is also no bunting or stepping out of the batter’s box. Walks are called “sprints.” Every defensive player, other than the pitcher and catcher, needs to touch the ball before it becomes live. Also, a ball caught by a fan is out.
