Navigating College Costs: Understanding Last Dollar Scholarships

Many students face financial challenges when pursuing higher education. Even after exploring various financial aid options, a funding gap may remain. Last dollar scholarships are designed to address this gap, making college more accessible. This article explores the eligibility requirements, application process, and renewal criteria for last dollar scholarships, providing a comprehensive guide for students seeking to bridge the financial divide.

What is a Last Dollar Scholarship?

A last dollar scholarship is a form of need-based financial aid. It’s designed to bridge the funding gap between the total cost of college and the financial aid you’ve received. These "last dollars" are intended to fill the gap between students' awarded financial aid and the real costs of college, such as computers, books, supplies, room and board, travel, and even graduation expenses. A last dollar scholarship is awarded to a student whose official Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as noted on their FAFSA Student Aid Report plus their other financial aid packages total up to less than the cost of their tuition and fees. Last-dollar scholarships are intended to be offered to students who demonstrate financial need. These scholarships may be offered by educational institutions, private organizations, or government agencies. Last dollar scholarships vary greatly from state to state and can even be the determining factor, in some cases, as to whether a student will attend college or not. If college is just an arm’s length away, don’t panic; there are countless options available to fund your education.

Eligibility Requirements for Last Dollar Scholarships

The main requirement is you must be eligible to receive funds through the Federal Pell Grant program. That means you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to receive any form of federal financial aid including the Pell Grant. The federal government uses the information you provide on the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for the Pell Grant. Besides financial criteria, there are also a few academic requirements.

FAFSA Completion

The first step in the process is to complete the FAFSA, which helps to determine financial need. The FAFSA collects detailed financial information from students and their families to assess their ability to contribute to college costs. This information includes income, assets, and household size.

Calculation of Financial Need

Once the financial need is determined, your school’s financial aid office will calculate the gap between the total cost of attendance and the amount covered by other forms of financial aid. The total cost of attendance includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and other educational expenses.

Awarding the Scholarship

Depending on the calculation, you may be awarded a last dollar scholarship amount that covers the remaining financial gap. The scholarship funds are usually disbursed directly to your school on your behalf. This ensures that the money is used for educational expenses.

Renewal Criteria for Last Dollar Scholarships

As with most forms of federal financial aid, last dollar scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time. They are generally renewable for up to four years but they are not renewed automatically. Students who receive this form of financial aid are required to meet some renewal criteria. The most important renewal requirement is re-submission of the FAFSA. You have to fill out and submit the FAFSA every year with your current financial information. Every year, your financial aid eligibility is re-calculated based on the latest information.

Staying Informed and Compliant

When applying for last dollar scholarships, make sure you carefully review the specific requirements and terms of each program and ensure you comply with the terms and conditions to maintain your eligibility. It’s just as important to stay informed about any changes or requirements related to your financial aid package.
