Learning Content

Stage 1: Explore (12+ months): Kids will listen to simple words, phrases, and songs.

Design and Assembly

Surprisingly, as small as this chair is, you do need to assemble it. It doesn’t matter though. Assembly is very simple. All you really need to do is stack the 3 pieces (the base, seat, and back) and screw them in together. Because things need to be screwed in, you will need to have a screwdriver handy. A drill isn’t really needed because these are not that hard to get screwed in. You are free to use your drill if you see fit, though. Once the screws are in, your chair is ready to be sat in. It took me less than five minutes to build before I realized that it is much easier to install the batteries first before assembling the rest of the chair. Also note that the conjoined rear legs have a protruding lip which helps prevent the chair from tipping backwards when baby tries to mimic daddy's infamous reclined position.

Storage and Portability

The seat on the chair can also be lifted up. This way your child can put some of their favorite smaller toys under the seat. It’s actually a pretty unique way to get kids to start putting away their toys. There isn’t really a storage mode for this chair but it’s small enough so that is not a problem. Your child can store their small gadgets under the seat which is nice. It is lightweight and very easy to assemble. The seat raises up to reveal a small storage compartment.

Setting Up the Chair

To get things activated, you will need 3 AA batteries to get the activities going. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the chair. Open the compartment with your screwdriver and install the batteries. Then turn on the unit by using the button on the right arm of the chair to turn the sounds and buttons on.

This chair has a surprisingly good amount of activities for each stage your child is at. With a flick of the switch on the front of right arm, you can set the stage (year) of where your child’s learning ability is. This is where the chair will adjust its activities based on where your toddler will learn the best. The book on the left arm flips and various sounds will trigger depending upon page you are on. The same thing happens once you press the numbers and shapes on the right arm. The seat is pressure sensitive so different things happen once your child sits on it.

Two Versions

There are two versions of the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Chair. The one I have is the yellow version. The other version comes in pink. Pink might be more desirable to the little girls. Both are available on Amazon.

Thinking back on how many toys the kids have had over the years, I am flabbergasted by the number of toys that served their purpose for a relatively short time. In some cases, my kids simply had no interest. In others, the kids outgrew them faster than the designer outfit their aunties bought for them for Christmas.
