Preparing for Your Class: Gear and Motorcycle Readiness

Before attending your Harley-Davidson Riding Academy class, ensure you have the necessary gear and that your motorcycle is in top condition.

Essential Gear

  • Tires: Check for dry rot (cracks in the sidewalls), tread depth, and proper air pressure. Refer to your owner’s manual for recommended tire pressures.
  • Controls: Inspect levers, pedals, cables, and hoses for proper function and condition.
  • Lights and Mirrors: Ensure headlights, turn signals, and taillights are functioning correctly. Make sure your mirrors are tight.
  • Oil and Fluids: Check oil levels and look for any obvious oil leaks.
  • Chassis: Examine the front and rear suspension for function and tightness. Check the final drive.
  • Stands: Verify that the side stand or center stand functions correctly and stows fully.

These checks take about ten minutes and will ensure that your bike is as ready for the class as you are.

Motorcycle Requirements

  • Street-Ready Motorcycle: Ensure your bike is in good working order and meets all legal requirements.
  • Motorcycle Endorsement, Permit, or License: Check with the H-D® dealer for specific requirements.
  • Proof of Valid Motorcycle Insurance: Essential for legal operation.

What to Expect at the Riding Academy

At the range, you will start the day with that pre-ride inspection on your bike, if you prepped it before the class you’ll be feeling confident about passing the pre-ride inspection. Here’s what you can expect during your Harley-Davidson Riding Academy course:

Expert Instruction

Your coaches will explain the course layout, read exercise objectives and instructions, ride a demo ride to show the path of travel and desired technique, and occasionally have you practice a skill on your bike with the engine off. Then it is your turn to ride.

Range Exercises

Exercises are generally about 30/40 minutes long and most programs will run two or three and then take a break. There will also be some range side “chalk talk” and activities, these are intended to sharpen your mental riding skills.

Comprehensive Curriculum

The courses typically cover essential skills, including:

  • Basic Controls: Learning the location and function of the clutch, throttle, brakes, and gear shift.
  • Starting and Stopping: Mastering smooth starts and controlled stops.
  • Turning and Maneuvering: Developing techniques for safe and effective turns.
  • Shifting Gears: Understanding when and how to shift gears for optimal performance.
  • Emergency Maneuvers: Practicing quick stops and evasive actions.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential hazards on the road.

Understanding Motorcycle Controls

For beginners, understanding the basic motorcycle controls is crucial. The controls and breaks of a motorcycle are split up into quadrants to match the four parts of your body with the most interaction with the bike, your hands, and feet.

Clutch

The clutch allows power to be applied gradually when a vehicle is starting out and interrupts power to avoid gear crunching when shifting. It’s important and not coordinating correctly can cause the bike to stall.

Throttle and Front Brake

Here, we focused on the throttle and extending my fingers up a bit to the lever, and I could also control the front brake, too. The throttle can be sensitive, requiring a relaxed grip.

Gear Shift

Using your foot, you kick up or down to shift gears (or to go into neutral). There is a sort of dialogue one has with the motorcycle, if the engine sounds high, shift higher. If the engine sounds low, shift lower, as a basic rule of thumb. What you’re doing is working with the engine against various environments like speed, road conditions, and even elevation. And, get this - you have to shift gears by kicking your left foot into the proper gear, hold in the clutch, and take your hand off the throttle in a fluid motion.

Rear Brake Pedal

This one is easy. It’s the rear brake pedal.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence

Learning to ride a motorcycle involves overcoming challenges and building confidence. Nervousness and tension can affect your riding, particularly when turning. If you tense up, it can cause you to grip the throttle tighter. To compensate for this, you might hit the brake while in the turn.
