Learning Wrap-Ups: A Hands-On Approach to Mastering Essential Skills

Learning Wrap-Ups are a manipulative that can be used practically anywhere. These are excellent for drill-work, because of their portability. Learning Wrap-Ups offer a unique and engaging alternative to traditional written exercises, appealing to kinesthetic learners and proving beneficial for all children. These tools are designed to reinforce essential skills in a fun, interactive way, making learning more accessible and enjoyable.

What are Learning Wrap-Ups?

Learning Wrap-Ups are self-correcting, joined-at-the-top boards with a colorful attached string. Each set contains 10 boards (120 problems), colorful wrapping strings, and instructions. The string wraps around from the problem on the left to the answer on the right. If the answers are correct, the string will cover the lines on the back of the board.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Kinesthetic Learning: Learning Wrap-Ups are a wonderful alternative to written drills for the kinesthetic child, but exciting for all children. The hands-on nature of Learning Wrap-Ups actively engages children in the learning process. The left-to-right wrapping motion may reinforce the tracking skills vital to reading.
  • Self-Correcting Design: Because it is self-correcting, your children will have immediate feedback for checking accuracy. The self-correcting feature on the back of each key provides immediate feedback, allowing children to learn independently and build confidence.
  • Portability: Here we finally have a manipulative that is truly portable! Your children can use Wrap-Ups in the car, at the beach, at the doctor's office, or even during a home school meeting; the possibilities are endless!
  • Versatility: Designed like a colorful, toy-like game, it delivers skill-appropriate content in Math and Language Arts through an interactive, hands-on approach. The Learning Wrap-Ups are neat little plastic “keys” with questions down one side, and answers down the other. You take the string, and wrap them around the keys from question to answer.
  • Skill Reinforcement: Learning Wrap-Ups® help to increase speed in fact recognition. Each Wrap-Up has twelve items on its left side and twelve on its right that need to be matched properly.
  • Multi-Sensory Learning: This is a wonderful tool for visual and kinesthetic children, and if you encourage them to say the problems aloud, it is equally marvelous for the auditory child. A unique patented learning tool which utilizes visual and tactile learning senses.

Subject Areas and Topics Covered

Wrap-ups come in groups of ten keys-all on a related topics-with the set permanently connected together with a rivet at the top. A single string connected to the rivet is used on whichever of the ten "keys" a student is using. Sets related to math are available for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, numbers, shapes and logic, and fractions (identification and equivalencies), and pre-algebra.

  • Math: Sets related to math are available for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, numbers, shapes and logic, and fractions (identification and equivalencies), and pre-algebra.
  • Language Arts: Learning Wrap ups for Math and Vocabulary.

Enhancing Learning with Complementary Resources

  • 10 Days to Math Fact Mastery Teaching Guides: 10 Days to Math Fact Mastery Teaching Guides are a great complement to the Learning Wrap-Ups. These reproducible books offer 32 pages of written practice and additional instruction for the fact families. There are 10 sections in each book, which provide step-by-step instructions for a 10-day learning program. A day-by-day list of materials is included at the front of the book with a short guide for the teacher. Using the Learning Wrap-Ups, students will fill in answers to problems that are displayed in a number of formats completing the problems, games, and circle or match the correct answer. Review pages are found throughout the books, and a final review wraps up the content of the book. Although these are written for the Learning Wrap-Ups manipulatives and instruction is provided for their use in each lesson, the books could also be used for written practice or review without them. They can be used as supplements to a text or as a mini-curriculum.
  • Student Workbooks: Student Workbooks for each set of facts are also available separately. These inexpensive, consumable student workbooks include 5-7 worksheet pages per day. Worksheets provide a variety of activities for the student to practice their facts including: drills, multiplication "tricks," story problems, and time goals to meet for completing the Wrap-Ups. 62 pages, non-reproducible.

How to Use Learning Wrap-Ups

  1. Select a Wrap-Up: Choose the Wrap-Up that corresponds to the skill you want to practice (e.g., addition, multiplication, vocabulary).
  2. Start Wrapping: Begin at the top of the Wrap-Up, matching the question on the left with the answer on the right by wrapping the string around the corresponding pegs.
  3. Continue Wrapping: Work your way down the Wrap-Up, connecting each question with its correct answer.
  4. Check Your Work: Once you've completed all the connections, flip the Wrap-Up over. The string should cover the lines on the back if all answers are correct. If any lines are visible, review your answers and make corrections.
  5. Challenge: Challenge your children to complete a board in less than a minute before they start the next board.

Integrating Learning Wrap-Ups into Different Learning Environments

  • Homeschooling: For hands-on learners, Wrap-Ups are a great way to reinforce and practice math. For children with other learning style preferences, it introduces variety into the practice and drill process, a process that can sometimes become tedious.
  • Classrooms: TraditionalTeacher-centered curriculum commonly used in classrooms that may include a text, teacher manual, tests, etc.
  • On-the-Go Learning: Because of the portability of Wrap-Ups, they can be practiced anywhere.

Advantages of Hands-On Learning

Hands-on learning materials can make school more fun (and effective!). We love manipulatives at our house, and use them often, especially with Mr. Man who is a hands on learner in every way.

  • Auditory: Learns through listening, talking out loud or reading out loud.
  • Visual: Learns through seeing, prefers written instructions and visual materials.
  • Kinesthetic/Tactile (Hands-On): Learns through moving, doing and touching.
  • Multi-Sensory: Curriculum that employ a variety of activities/components.

Tips for Maximizing the Effectiveness of Learning Wrap-Ups

  • Make it a Game: Buy 2 sets and have a "wrap-off"! How about a "relay-wrap" at your next support group meeting? The boys really like using them, and have been known to “race” to see who can finish them correctly first.
  • Incorporate Timed Activities: Timed activities help children develop rapid fluency.
  • Combine with Other Resources: If you want to focus on one function at a time in math, you can buy Wrap-Ups in individual sets, but I would recommend the sets that include the "10 Days" book. For example, 10 Days to Addition Mastery works with the Addition Wrap-Ups Keys. The 32-page, reproducible book provides lesson plans that incorporate the Wrap-Ups with interactive and worksheet activities.
