Navigating Liberty University: A Guide to Campus Rules and Regulations

Liberty University provides a comprehensive on-campus experience for its students. To ensure a safe, respectful, and productive environment, the university has established a variety of rules and regulations. This article outlines key aspects of these guidelines, covering topics from dress code and technology use to housing policies and safety measures.

Maintaining Accurate Contact Information

It is the responsibility of each student to keep their contact information up to date. Addresses, phone numbers, and emergency contact information can be changed in the student’s myLU account. The appropriate office must be notified of any changes within 30 days to ensure that the student is reachable in case of emergencies and to receive important information. Students must also inform the Office of Admissions and Student Services of the address they will be using during vacation periods.

Dress Code Expectations

Dress is viewed as a personal form of expression, but the university also recognizes that attire conveys respect and professionalism. While different activities may require different standards of dress, all members of the Liberty University community, including students, faculty, and staff, are expected to show good judgment in their attire and grooming. Generally, everyday attire should be neat, clean, and conservative, avoiding clothing that is too tight or overly revealing.

LUCOM Dress Code

Students attending the Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) have specific dress code requirements. Classroom attire should reflect an understanding of the medical profession and the respect it holds within the community.

Professional activities, especially in clinical settings, require formal professional dress, which is standard clinical education practice in healthcare organizations. Unless otherwise specified, a short student-length white clinical coat issued by LUCOM, a nametag/name identification, and a LU-issued ID badge will be required over standard professional dress during LUCOM-assigned clinical assignments in healthcare delivery settings when students interact with patients and are supervised by attending clinical faculty. Students on clinical courses must also comply with the dress code of the clinical site and OSHA standards. Scrubs may be worn if appropriate and approved by their preceptor.

Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or other inappropriate clothing are not permitted at clinical sites. If a course director, clinical supervisor, faculty member, Director of Medical Education at a community-based site, or their designee observes a dress code violation, the student may be asked to leave the clinical setting or site.

Casual dress is permitted in settings where the public is not expected to be present, but attire should still be appropriate for the event or dictated by safety protocols and OSHA requirements. Faculty and staff will report dress code violations to the Office of Admissions and Student Services. Student doctor reports about other student doctors will be reported to the Honor Court.

Responsible Use of Computing Resources

All users, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests, must have proper authorization to use these resources and are responsible for using them effectively, ethically, and legally.

Social Media Guidelines for LUCOM Students

LUCOM student-doctors are expected to interact on social media professionally and personally, representing the College of Osteopathic Medicine appropriately. Students must be mindful of how they present themselves online and aware that posting certain information is illegal, potentially leading to criminal and civil liability.

LUCOM Marketing serves as the administrator and owner of official online social media platforms and groups representing LUCOM. Students are not permitted to create their own social media pages, groups, or handles that reflect an official connection or affiliation with the COM.

These guidelines apply to all online platforms, including social networking sites and sites with user-generated content, and aim to facilitate deliberate professional engagement and casual conversation. All communications or requests from public or professional media to students regarding LUCOM policy, procedures, or news stories must be handled through official channels.

Williams Stadium Policies

To enhance safety and expedite entrance to Williams Stadium, Liberty University has implemented a clear bag policy. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6” x 12”, or one-gallon plastic freezer bags, will be allowed inside Williams Stadium. Small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will also be permitted. All guests, including faculty and staff, should be prepared to go through security screening before entering the stadium.

On-Campus Living Guidelines

Liberty University requires all unmarried students under 21 years old to live on campus. All on-campus students are subject to the rules, regulations, and policies contained in the Liberty Way and the On-Campus Living Guide.

The university is not responsible for damage to or loss of personal belongings resulting from fire, wind, water, insects, rodents, vandalism, or theft. However, the university will take reasonable steps to resolve reported problems.

Off-Campus Living

While Liberty affirms the value of on-campus living, it recognizes that certain seasons of life may call for a different living arrangement. A student may live off-campus if they are 21 years of age or older. If a student meets this criteria, their off-campus application will be automatically approved. Off-campus students are responsible for all information contained in the Off-Campus Living Guide.

Students are responsible for their own off-campus housing arrangements. Single co-ed living arrangements are not in keeping with Liberty’s philosophy and purpose. Students must update their local address and telephone number on their ASIST account within seven days from the beginning of classes.

If a student moves off-campus during the first three weeks of the semester (beginning with the first day of check-in), the housing fee will be charged at a weekly rate. There will be no rebate for the room portion of the housing fee after the first three weeks. The meals portion will be rebated at a flat rate regardless of room location. Approval to live off-campus must be obtained from the Office of Residence Life before signing a lease.

Campus Safety and Security

Campus safety is a top priority for parents and students. All Liberty University Police Department (LUPD) personnel are trained in Basic First Aid, CPR, and AED services. LUPD may work with the Lynchburg Police Department, other law enforcement agencies, and first responders to ensure safety.

Champion Safe is Liberty University’s official safety app, integrated with the university’s safety and security systems to enhance campus protection for students, faculty, and staff.

Safety Training

All new students must take a campus safety seminar during their first semester as a graduation requirement. Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the Active Assailant Community Preparedness Class (AACP). The emergency alert system is open to all members of the Liberty University community with a Liberty network account. During an emergency, Liberty University may use the notification system in conjunction with other communication measures, such as the outdoor sirens, to alert the Liberty community.

Firearm Policy

Liberty University supports responsible firearm ownership while maintaining a safe campus environment. Students, faculty/staff, and visitors are permitted to conceal carry while on campus, provided they have a valid state permit available at all times and can present it upon request. LUPD offers a General Firearms Safety Course to provide Liberty faculty, staff, students, and family the opportunity to practice safe firearm handling. This course includes a 90-minute instructional course, followed by a 30-minute practical range exercise.
