Liberty University Graduation Ceremony: A Tradition of Excellence and Faith
Liberty University's graduation ceremony is a momentous occasion, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication for its students. More than just an academic milestone, it is a celebration deeply rooted in the university's mission of Training Champions for Christ. The ceremony integrates worship and the Gospel, a unique aspect that distinguishes it from many other universities. As graduates embark on their chosen vocations, the university seeks God's blessings and guidance for them.
From Humble Beginnings to Grand Celebrations
Liberty University's Commencement has evolved significantly since its first ceremony in 1974, which celebrated 57 graduates. The Class of 2025 will witness over 30,000 degrees conferred. The Main Ceremony takes place in Williams Stadium.
A Symphony of Events
The graduation festivities extend beyond the Main Ceremony, encompassing a series of individual degree presentation ceremonies. These ceremonies are strategically located across six venues: Liberty Arena, Vines Center, Liberty Multipurpose Center, Thomas Road Baptist Church, Williams Stadium, and the Center for Music and the Worship Arts, Concert Hall. This distribution ensures a more intimate and personalized experience for graduates and their families.
The Main Ceremony: A Spectacle of Inspiration
The Commencement Main Ceremony in Williams Stadium includes a keynote address. The ceremony incorporates worship and the Gospel throughout.
A Drone Show Finale
An addition to this year’s Main Ceremony is a drone show finale, illuminating the night sky with 300 drones that will visually tell a Liberty-themed story.

Behind the Scenes: A Team Effort
The success of Liberty University's graduation ceremony hinges on the coordinated efforts of numerous staff members across various departments. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to prepare the grounds, event spaces, technology, dining, signs, programs, and other essentials, ensuring a seamless and memorable experience for every graduate and guest.
Event Management's Orchestration
The Event Management Division, comprised of 38 individuals, plays a central role in orchestrating the logistical aspects of Commencement. Their responsibilities include setting up chairs and other items at the ceremony venues as early as April 28, problem-solving, and working long hours. The team also carefully manages the daily campus events to prevent any conflicts with Commencement preparations and ceremonies.
Broadcast Communications' Technical Prowess
Broadcast Communications is responsible for providing in-venue sound and video as well as livestreams of 32 ceremonies. The team conducts soundchecks and rehearsals for production to run smoothly and effectively.
Prioritizing Safety and Well-being
Ensuring the safety and well-being of the campus community and visitors during a large-scale, multi-day event like Commencement is the top priority of the Office of Security & Public Safety. They have partnered with various law enforcement agencies to plan operations in accordance with their state-recognized operational plan. The office is also utilizing the School of Aeronautics’ Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to use drones that provide aerial coverage of the campus to view traffic and individuals in need of emergency aid.
A Welcoming Atmosphere
Liberty University strives to create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for graduates and their families throughout the Commencement weekend. A Welcome Fair will be held in the Montview Alumni Ballroom, where graduates can pick up their honor or military cords, reader cards, pick up a free T-shirt, and have formal regalia photos taken.
