This article delves into the history of the Liberty Flames men’s soccer team, highlighting key moments, conference affiliations, and the program’s vision for the future.
Early Years and Conference Affiliations
Founded in 1971, Liberty University has grown into a prominent institution offering over 700 unique programs of study. The Liberty Flames men's soccer team, as an intercollegiate varsity sports team, has been an integral part of the university's athletic program.
The Flames previously competed in the Big South Conference, where they achieved significant milestones, including NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2011. These appearances underscored the team's competitive strength and its ability to contend at the national level.
In a more recent move, the team competed in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The OVC added men's soccer as a championship sport, providing Liberty with another platform for competition and growth. Last Season, The Flames went 7-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Transition to the Southern Conference
The Southern Conference announced the addition of the Liberty University Men’s Soccer team to the conference beginning in the 2026 season. This move represents a strategic step for the program, aligning with its vision for sustained growth and competitiveness.

Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross stated, "We warmly and heartily welcome Liberty University to the Southern Conference as an associate member in men's soccer. Liberty brings a tradition of athletic and academic commitment which aligns perfectly with the history and values of the SoCon." He noted that their addition strengthens the conference's men's soccer standing nationally, provides another rival within their geographic footprint, and offers exciting new competitive opportunities for member institutions.
The addition of the Flames upholds the SoCon’s commitment to the tag line “It’s All Here” which encompasses the leagues identity within the NCAA landscape including a tight geographic footprint in the southeast, unity among its institutions, opportunity both in the classroom and as athletes, and authenticity as a competitive league focused on the student athlete experience.
Flames head coach Kelly Findley expressed gratitude to the Liberty Administration for allowing the team to find a new conference home in the well-respected Southern Conference. “Joining the SoCon is a strategic step that aligns with our vision for sustained growth and competitiveness, and we are eager to test ourselves and continue striving for excellence on and off the field,” said Findley.
Benefits of Joining the SoCon
Several factors contributed to the decision to join the Southern Conference. The SoCon offers quality regional competition, which reduces travel time and missed class time for student-athletes. This is particularly important for maintaining a balance between academic and athletic commitments.
UNCG Men’s Soccer coach Chris Rich emphasized the importance of adding associate members to enhance the league's competitiveness. “As a smaller league, in size, with only six teams, we clearly needed to explore adding associate members, but it’s essential that we only do so if it makes our league better. Liberty will do that. They fit our league geographically, have a great facility, and are very well coached with Kelly Findley. Getting us to seven teams also fixes the issue of having an unbalanced conference schedule, so we will now be balanced with three home and three away.”
