Lighthouse Guild Scholarships: Empowering Visually Impaired Students to Achieve Academic Excellence

The Lighthouse Guild scholarships recognize the achievements of academically qualified high school and college students with vision loss. These scholarships support higher education for all individuals and help students with vision loss make a successful transition to college and graduate education. The program awards scholarships to outstanding legally blind high school students from across the United States and also provides a scholarship each year to a qualifying graduate student.

Overcoming Challenges and Pursuing Higher Education

Living with blindness or vision loss presents unique challenges. The Lighthouse Guild understands that the high cost of college should not be an additional obstacle. They believe that nothing should stop people who are blind or visually impaired from pursuing higher education and offer scholarships to help them fulfill their aspirations of attending college, graduate school, or pursuing higher education.

Additional Resources for Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities and their families can access a number of resources to navigate the financial aid process and access scholarships. Government agencies, high schools, colleges and organizations that focus on people with disabilities can provide valuable guidance.

Specific sources of financial aid for students with disabilities include fellowships, loans, and grants. The majority of scholarships require that the student must be legally blind in both eyes. Scholarships specifically for students who are blind are provided by individual nonprofit agencies.

Peterson's also offers information on college financial aid assistance for students with disabilities.

The Department of Education’s Federal TRIO Program provides education grants for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including students with disabilities. In addition, there are a variety of free resources for students and families who need help with financial aid paperwork.
