Tuition Reset for Increased Accessibility

For the 2026-2027 school year, Linsly is reducing its published tuition rates as part of a broader effort to make a Linsly education more accessible to families across the Ohio Valley and beyond. Beginning next year, day tuition will be reduced, with middle school tuition set at $15,000 and upper school tuition at $17,000.

Zimmerman said, “This reset is about ensuring that Linsly remains accessible to families who value a strong college-preparatory education rooted in character, leadership, and foundational learning.”

Current Tuition Rates

As of a verified school update, the yearly tuition for day students is $17,850. For boarding students, the yearly tuition is $40,740.

Boarding students enjoy leisure time in the Simmons Student Center. Resident students at Linsly live in a warm neighborhood community that consists of dormitories and faculty residences. The ratio of on-campus faculty to resident students is one of the best in the country, 3:1. Student dormitories are literally extensions of faculty homes. Residence life at Linsly provides a structured, safe, and disciplined environment. Resident students and faculty members eat a sit-down dinner together every evening. Resident students have mandatory study sessions every evening supervised by faculty members. Weekends for resident students include fun, organized activities. Student dormitories are wired for internet access.

A Rich History and Enduring Traditions

Founded upon Noah Linsly's death in 1814, his will provided money for the establishment of a Lancastrian Academy in Wheeling, Virginia. In 1877, the Academy, located in the then newly-formed state of West Virginia, was renamed the Linsly Military Institute in honor of its founding benefactor. The school's first location was in downtown Wheeling, purchased with the sale of two farms that Noah Linsly had left to the Lancastrian Academy. The second building was in downtown Wheeling, Va. This building was used as a temporary statehouse when West Virginia became a state. The building is known as the First State Capitol. The third school building was located on National Road in the Woodsdale section of Wheeling. It was built in 1925 and officially named Thedah Place but was known as Old Main. Linsly owned property across the creek from this building, where the dormitories were (and still are) located.

Louis Bennett Jr. never attended Linsly but is memorialized by a statue, "The Aviator", outside of Banes Hall, one of 7 that his mother commissioned in his honor. Bennett joined the Royal Flying Corps in World War I and defeated enough German aircraft to become an ace before being shot down over France.

Linsly originally enrolled both girls and boys. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Linsly became an all-boys school. In 1876, Linsly became a military institute under Headmaster John Burch and would continue to be so for the next 102 years. In 1979, Headmaster Reno Diorio transitioned Linsly to a traditional college preparatory school format.

The Linsly Extravaganza, formerly known as the Minstrel, is a tradition begun in 1939 by Douglas Haigwood.
