Northeastern University Logo: A Visual History of Innovation and Tradition
Northeastern University, a private research university located in Boston, Massachusetts, has a rich history rooted in its founding in 1898. From its origins as the Evening Institute for Younger Men, established by the Boston Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), to its current status as a leading institution with a global presence, Northeastern has consistently evolved while maintaining a strong connection to its past. This evolution is visually represented in the university's logos and seals, each reflecting the institution's values, mission, and history.
The Early Years: 1898 - 1916
Northeastern University's story began in 1898 when it was founded as the Evening Institute for Younger Men by the YMCA. The university's first logo is linked to the YMCA. The seal and inscription were likely developed in 1896 when the men’s department was established. However, the exact date is unknown. Gradually, the institution moved beyond the confines of faith but respected and remembered its roots, as reflected in the ancient seal still in use. As an organization, it studied math, law, literature, languages, geography, music and other disciplines. In addition, a banjo club, camera club, orchestra, and weekly parliamentary debates and discussions were promoted. A good education for "any young man of moral character" with a YMCA membership was promised. Located in a new headquarters building at the corner of Boylston and Berkeley streets in Boston, the institute held its first classes in 1898.
Transition and Transformation: 1916 - 1922
The Northeastern University emblem likely changed in 1916 when the institute was transformed into a college, but no records of the identity have survived. In 1916, a bill was introduced into the Massachusetts Legislature to incorporate the institute as Northeastern College. Five years later the college changed its name to Northeastern University to better reflect the increasing depth of its instruction.
The University Seal: 1922 - Present
The university seal is styled as a circle with some pictures on it. At the center of the seal, we can see a lit torch, supposed to reflect the light of knowledge. There are many lines with sharp tips, pointing at the torch. Below, there is an ornament of laurel wreath, and a parchment with ‘Lux Veritas Virtus’ motto, meaning ‘Light, Truth, Courage’. This whole image has been incorporated into a ring with the brand name and the year of foundation. In the outer ring, the name is split in two parts, placed prominently at the top and bottom. The number is also divided into two halves, placed oppositely on the left and right sides.
The contemporary university seal is based on the ancient symbol with minor differences. Around the edge of the circle is the inscription Northeastern University. As the institution has a system of intercity campuses, the mention of Boston was removed. On the right and left of the circle is the year of foundation, split into two numbers: 18 and 98. Therefore, the heraldic ribbon was removed, reducing the load on the lower part of the mark. The other elements remain unchanged.

The emblem’s centerpiece is a circular sign with multiple symbols that tell the story of the institution’s values, mission, and history. The circle, as an image of harmony, indicates the process of well-rounded development for believing men. The university considered it its duty to contribute to the perfection and success of morally developed young men. The strip around the circle’s edge stated the university’s name and location. Initially founded as an evening institute, it gained university status in 1922. At the center of the image was a burning torch, its rays occupying all the inner space. The fire symbolizes the light of knowledge and also hints at Jesus, who is “the Light of the world.” Initially, education was only available to YMCA members. Dormitories and classrooms were located on the upper floors of the organization’s administrative building, along with Bible study classes. A Latin inscription on the scroll in the middle read: Lux Veritas Virtus. Since a Christian organization founded the university, words about virtue and truth were chosen as the main motto. Interestingly, in the font, the letters V and U have the same design, making the phrase difficult to read. This technique emphasizes the need to exert effort to acquire knowledge. At the base were two laurel branches as a crown for those who diligently studied and achieved success and glory. A heraldic ribbon indicated the university’s founding year.
The Logo Before 2009
The image depicts the logo of Northeastern University prior to 2009. The logo combines graphic elements and typography to represent the university’s identity. On the left is a square emblem with a stylized image of a torch with rays of light emanating, symbolizing enlightenment, learning, and growth. This emblem is set against a deep red background, which is a color often associated with energy, passion, and strength. Beside the emblem, the name “Northeastern University” is written in bold, capitalized letters, suggesting a sense of solidity and establishment. The font is straightforward and unadorned, indicating clarity and professionalism. The color of the text is a contrasting white against a red rectangular background, which matches the emblem and provides a cohesive look. The color red is significant as it is often used in educational institutions to represent tradition and a strong sense of community. The use of red and white in the logo also offers a strong visual contrast, making it stand out and easily recognizable. The logo’s symbolism and color choice likely held significance for the Northeastern University community and the region it serves, reflecting its commitment to education and its standing as a beacon of knowledge in the area.
Another version of the Northeastern University badge, used for almost a century, featured a combination of a circular seal with a bright red lettering, written on its right in an elegant traditional serif font. Despite quite aggressive shade or red, the inscription still looked very soft due to the thin line and sharp long serifs of the letters.
The 2009 - 2018 Logo
Next to the circular sign on the right, the university’s name is written in thin red letters. The red hue resonates with the theme of fire, speaking of dedication and immersion in science.
The Modern Logo: 2018 - Today
The modern logo is a symbol of a large red letter N, into the first line of which the well-known Latin motto: light, truth, virtue, is inscribed. The unusual font with refined, wineglass-stem-like serifs and words in the middle of the glyph looks extraordinary. The sign intertwines history and modernity. However, a small but significant place is given to the former, as the letter leans on the motto, and without it, the glyph would be broken. Then follows the university’s name, set in two levels in black font.

The logotype has been composes of two elements: the large ‘N’ character, and an inscription with the brand name, featured in a two-line plate. The left bar of the ‘N’ letter has been interrupted by the university slogan.
Font and Colors
Black and red create a pleasant contrast that enlivens the theme of education. Therefore, the primary symbol of Northeastern University is red. It embodies the fullness of life. The black elements represent hard work, without which one cannot become a true professional.
The emblem uses two fonts-one for the name and another for the motto. The serifs of Nicolas Jenson SG Bold and the dot-droplets at the ends of the glyphs speak of dedication to the sciences within the university walls.
There are four fonts used for the graphical identity of NU brand. Two fonts are used in the seal: the name has a capitalized script with serif letters, while the motto and the ‘1898’ number have a bold script. The sans-serif slogan letters are capitalized. In the logo, we can see the bold name with uppercase letters, which have small serifs. The first letters are capitals, while the following ones have a lowercase font. The large ‘N’ letter has a capitalized script with large serifs. The motto interrupting the ‘N’ left bar has the same font as in the seal.
The NU color palette is featured in two main shades: black and red. The seal is fully red. The logotype consists of a red ‘N’ letter, the left bar of which is interrupted by the black motto.

A New Visual Identity
In recent years, Northeastern University undertook a comprehensive branding initiative to modernize its visual identity while honoring its history. The university collaborated with a team of strategists, photographers, designers, and writers. The team started with the seal and its hand-drawn typography from the 1930s, working outwards to define a typographic and expressive system. Husky Logo Evolution
The old Northeastern Huskies logo introduced in 1992 sported an angled view of the head of a husky. The dog was placed over the grey sector with red trim. The words “Northeastern” and “Huskies” were written above in red and white respectively. On the 2001 version, a leaping husky could be seen. A 2007-adopted logo was just a big letter ‘N’. The 2018 design lacks excess, compared to the older emblems. They added a husky’s head in black and white, but it’s now a realistic depiction, even if short on detail.
Brand Guidelines for the Huskies
The King Husky head is one of our most commonly used marks and encapsulates the spirit of the Northeastern community. It must be paired with a second Northeastern mark in the same design. Use the outline version sparingly and only when needed for legibility. The Standing Husky offers a full body version of the King Husky. It must be paired with a second Northeastern mark in the same design. When combined, the Husky Monogram lockups offer a visual shorthand for the brand. Both versions work at large sizes; use head-only at small sizes. Do not add an outline to the husky in this lockup.
