Exploring Job Opportunities at Longwood University

Longwood University, nestled in the heart of Virginia, specifically within the two-college community of Farmville, stands as one of America’s hundred-oldest institutions of higher learning. As an agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Longwood University is committed to providing equal opportunities in education and employment. This article delves into the various job opportunities available at Longwood University, with a particular focus on student employment.

Equal Opportunity Employer

Longwood University operates as an equal-opportunity institution of higher learning. Consistent with Federal and State law, the University promotes equal opportunity for all prospective and current students and employees. The University upholds a policy of non-discrimination against any individual based on race, sex, color, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, political affiliation, military status, or disability status. The only exception to this policy is in relation to employment where a bonafide occupational qualification exists. You are not required to note the presence of a disability on your application.

Student Employment Opportunities

Longwood University offers a variety of on-campus job opportunities for students, divided into two primary categories: Federal Work Study (FWS) and Longwood Work Study (LWS). These programs provide valuable work experience and financial assistance to students while they pursue their education.

Longwood Work Study (LWS)

All full-time students at Longwood University are eligible for Longwood Work Study (LWS). There is no separate application process for LWS. This program allows students to work in various departments across the university, gaining practical experience and earning income to help offset their educational expenses.

Federal Work Study (FWS)

Federal Work Study (FWS) is a need-based program offered to students who have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Eligibility for FWS is determined by a student's financial need, as assessed through the FAFSA, and is included as part of their overall financial aid package. Students who qualify for FWS can find job opportunities in various departments on campus.

Finding and Securing a Student Job

Canvas is the primary platform where available on-campus positions are posted. It is regularly updated as positions are filled and new jobs become available. Students are encouraged to check Canvas frequently for opportunities that align with their interests and skills. Various departments on-campus employ students throughout the year, offering a diverse range of work experiences. Before a student can begin working and receiving payment, the Student Employment Coordinator must approve their Work Authorization. A student will not be placed on payroll, or paid for any hours worked until the Student Employment Coordinator approves your Work Authorization.
