Eligibility and Award Amounts

Qualified international students can receive up to $4,000 in renewable merit-based scholarships. Students earning a GPA of 3.0 and higher are eligible to receive merit scholarships. These annual awards are renewable for all four years for those who meet the renewal criteria.

English Language Support

English Language Bridge Program (EBP)

For international students whose TOEFL or IELTS scores are slightly below the required level, Longwood offers the English Language Bridge Program (EBP). This program allows students to enroll as first-semester freshmen, taking a combination of academic courses and academic English support courses. Longwood University Scholarship

Longwood offers a one-time scholarship to be awarded annually to an eligible undergraduate student from Virginia to partially defray the cost of attendance. The application period for 2025-2026 has closed.

Lancers Abroad Scholarship

Students who plan to study abroad through an approved, credit-bearing program are encouraged to apply for a Lancers Abroad Scholarship. To apply for the Lancers Abroad Scholarship, you must be a current Longwood University student with a minimum GPA of 2.0, and submit a 300-word essay written in English. Students applying for a scholarship for the first time may receive priority over students applying more than once.

Lancers Abroad Correspondent Scholarship

Social-media savvy students who plan to study abroad through an approved, credit-bearing program are encouraged to apply for a Lancers Abroad Correspondent Scholarship. To apply for this scholarship, you must be a current Longwood University student with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and submit a Correspondent Plan that details how you will share your experience abroad in photos, videos, and writing via various social media platforms.

Deadline: Sept. 15 (Spring programs); Feb.

Presidential Scholarship

Students who plan to study abroad in a non-Anglophone country through an approved, credit-bearing program are encouraged to apply for the Presidential Scholarship. To apply for the Presidential Scholarship, you must be a current Longwood University student with a minimum GPA of 2.5, and submit a 500-word essay written in English. MOLA majors receive priority over students not majoring in a foreign language.

Global Engagement Scholarship

Pell Grant recipients who plan to study abroad through a Longwood Faculty-Led program, are encouraged to apply for a Global Engagement Scholarship. To apply for this scholarship, you must be a current Longwood University student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be a Pell Grant recipient with a current FAFSA on file.

Exchange Travel Grant

Lancers who plan to study abroad through a Longwood exchange partner institution are encouraged to apply for an Exchange Travel Grant to subsidize their travel to the exchange program location. To apply for this grant, you must be a current Longwood University student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and have been accepted to an exchange program.

External Study Abroad Scholarships

Longwood University also encourages students to explore external scholarship opportunities to support their study abroad experiences. These include:

Freeman-ASIA Award: This award supports undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. A Freeman-ASIA Award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc. Grant amounts are up to $3,000 for the summer; up to $5,000 for the semester; and up to $7,000 for the academic year.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: This scholarship supports U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university.
Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship: Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society awards multiple $1000 study abroad scholarships each year. A minimum 3.75 GPA is required to apply. This scholarship is open to all students and is not limited to members of Phi Kappa Phi.
Boren Awards for International Study: Boren Awards provide funding for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Boren Scholars can receive up to $20,000 depending on the length of their study and commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.
Affiliate Scholarships: Many of our affiliated partners offer scholarships to students participating in their programs. We encourage students to meet with an advisor to discuss scholarship opportunities during the application process.

How to Apply

To apply for scholarships at Longwood University, international students should follow these steps:

Complete the Application: Submit the Longwood University application for admission.
Submit Transcripts: Send certified official, original transcripts as well as any leaving certificate scores from all secondary institutions with certified English translations and evaluations with an explanation of grading system/scaleSecondary Education: Proof of successful completion of secondary education (e.g., secondary school transcripts, final exam scores, diploma) with certified English translations.
Verify English Language Proficiency: Ensure that you meet the English language proficiency requirements.
