Boston College is reeling after a demoralizing loss to UConn, and now faces a daunting road trip to face a ranked Louisville team. Louisville, fresh off an upset win over Miami, looks to continue its dominance. With Louisville heavily favored, let's delve into a comprehensive preview of this Week 9 matchup.

Louisville's Perspective
Momentum and Key Players
A hiccup against No. 16 Virginia may have been exactly what No. 22 Louisville football needed. Louisville is coming off a huge 24-21 victory over then-No. 2 Miami. Louisville's defense picked off Canes QB Carson Beck four times, wide receiver Chris Bell caught nine passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Isaac Brown ran for 113 yards on 15 carries.
The Cardinals are led by fifth-year transfer QB Miller Moss, who has thrown for 1,606 yards with 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Miller Moss will need a game like this to keep his momentum on the season going. His primary target is Chris Bell, who is among the ACC leaders in receiving yards per game and is tied for the most touchdown receptions in the conference with six. Sophomore running back Isaac Brown is averaging over seven yards per carry this season.
Defensive Prowess
In all of the NCAA, Louisville ranks 10th in yards allowed per game-its defense gives up just 274 yards per game, which is the best mark in the ACC. Junior defensive lineman Clev Lubin leads the defense, ranking third on the team in tackles with 27 and a team-leading four sacks. Seven players on the roster have at least one sack, led by Clev Lubin’s four, while LB Antonio Watts has 3 picks. Louisville’s secondary also presents a challenge for BC. Safety Antonio Watts has three interceptions this season, good for second in the ACC. The unit as a whole is the best ACC secondary in passing yards allowed per game, averaging 170.

Historical Context
Louisville hasn't lost to BC at home since 2017 and has won the last two meetings against the Eagles. BC dropped last year’s matchup to Louisville 31-27.
Boston College's Perspective
Dismal Season and Injuries
As for the Eagles, year two under head coach Bill O'Brien has been nothing short of a complete and total disaster. While Boston College won their opener against Fordham, they have since lost six-in-a-row, including 38-23 at home to UConn this past Saturday. It's their first 1-6 start to a season since 2012. Boston College fell to a new low this past Saturday, once again collapsing in the second half to lose by two scores to regional rival UConn. Simply put, there is very little - if anything - in the Eagles program that brings hope.
Injuries won’t even allow BC to get back on track. The injury report continues to look brutal. O’Brien said in his midweek presser that LB Bam Crouch, WR Jaedn Skeete, and CB Syair Torrence are done for the year; OL Eryx Daugherty and CB Amari Jackson may return but are unlikely to appear against Louisville. BC has Daveon Crouch, Syair Torrence, Jaedn Skeete, Ashton Cunningham, Amari Jackson, Cam Martinez, Johnathan Montague, Jaylen Blackwell, Jason Hewlett, and Onye Nwosisi out, among others. They are returning Owen Stoudmire, Ty Clemons, and Kwan Williams at least, three of their defensive linemen who did not play against UConn. But with most of their starting defense out, it seems very unlikely BC will be able to keep Louisville contained at all. In their last two ACC games, at Pitt and vs. Clemson, BC has been out-scored 89-to-17.
Offensive Struggles
Grayson James will continue to start at QB after posting 204 yards and 2 TDs on 16-28 passing. Where James really struggles is dealing with a pass rush. Again UConn James was sacked seven times. He’ll be protected by a makeshift line that gave up seven sacks to the Huskies. Grayson James we need you. If Grayson James can start slinging the ball a little bit now that he has taken over as the starting QB, at least the games might be slightly enjoyable to watch.
In the run game, Turbo Richard is the work horse for the Eagles. But Richard got hurt BC’s last time out and is questionable for Saturday’s game. In his stead Jordan McDonald had a great game of 123 yards. On the bright side, the running game finally got going with James and Jordan McDonald doing some damage with their legs. Unfortunately, I do not expect that continue against a much better Cardinals defense that creates splash plays all over the field.

Defensive Deficiencies
I don’t even want to get into how bad the Eagles’ defense has looked recently; the complete lack of a pass rush combined with an inexperienced and undersized secondary is a disastrous combination. This Louisville offense seems to be gelling at the worst time for the Eagles, scoring 24 points last week on Miami’s vaunted defense to take down the #2 team in the country. For BC to upset the Cardinals in Louisville, they will need to pressure Moss, something the Eagles have struggled with all season.
Key Matchups and Predictions
The key matchup to watch is Louisville's offensive line against Boston College's defensive front. If Louisville can protect Moss, he should have a field day against the Eagles' secondary. Conversely, if Boston College can generate pressure, they might be able to force some turnovers and keep the game close.
