LSUS Undergraduate Admissions: Requirements and Contact Information

Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) welcomes applications from all prospective students and strives to provide a fulfilling academic journey for everyone. The university operates on a traditional two-semester system, supplemented by a multi-session summer term. LSUS also provides accelerated courses, primarily online, during the fall, spring, and summer terms. Qualified applicants can register at the start of any semester or accelerated session. The following outlines the undergraduate admission procedures and requirements for various applicant categories.

Who Should Apply?

LSUS caters to a diverse range of students, including:

  • High school graduates entering college for the first time.
  • Students with less than 18 hours of transferable college credit.
  • Students transferring from other colleges or universities with 18 or more transferable credit hours.
  • Students currently enrolled at another institution who plan to return there in the future (visiting students).
  • Individuals interested in taking courses without seeking academic credit (audit students).
  • Individuals who have been out of high school or college for at least three years and are seeking personal enrichment (Educational Enrichment Program students).

How to Apply

Prospective students can apply online through the university's website. A non-refundable application fee is required for first-time students. It is important to note that all documents submitted to the Office of Admissions become part of the student's official record and will not be returned or released to third parties.

Required Documents and Credentials

All applicants must submit the following to the Office of Admissions and Records:

  • A completed application form.
  • The non-refundable application fee.
  • Immunization records.
  • Official test scores (ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER Next Generation).
  • An official high school transcript.

LSUS uses a holistic review of the total high school record, including: rigor of courses completed, grades, standardized test scores, educational objectives and experiences. Additionally, students must submit at least one letter of recommendation from an academic source (counselor, teacher, advisor, administrator, etc.) or someone who can speak to the student’s ambitions, work ethic, or perseverance through challenges.

Immunization Requirements

Before registering for classes, students born after 1956 must provide proof of immunization or immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and tetanus/diphtheria. First-time freshmen must also submit proof of immunization against meningitis. These policies apply to all new students and those returning after an absence of one semester or more.

Students may request an exemption from the immunization requirement for medical or personal reasons. However, in the event of an outbreak, the university may require unvaccinated students to leave campus and be excluded from classes.

Standardized Testing

Applicants are generally required to take the American College Testing (ACT), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), or ACCUPLACER Next Generation test and have the scores sent to LSUS. These scores are used to determine eligibility for admission and placement in appropriate courses. Information and registration forms for these tests are available from high school counselors, the ACT, or the College Board.

High School Transcript Requirements

Beginning freshmen or transfer students with fewer than 18 non-developmental credit hours earned who graduated from a Louisiana high school within the past three years do not need to request that their high school send transcripts to LSUS. The Office of Admissions and Records will request the final transcript from the Board of Regents and the Louisiana Department of Education’s Student Transcript System.

However, if the student graduated from a Louisiana high school more than three years ago or from a high school in another state, they must request that the high school send an official transcript to the Office of Admissions and Records at LSUS.

Admission Criteria for First-Time Freshmen

Admissibility is based on high school curriculum (which must meet Louisiana Board of Regents Core Requirements in effect at the time of graduation), high school GPA, ACT scores, and the need, if any, for developmental coursework.

A first-time freshman who is 25 years of age or older is not required to meet Board of Regents’ minimum admission criteria for first-time freshmen. However, they must require no developmental courses as determined by ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER Next Generation (passing Writing and Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics [QRAS]), or departmental placement test. They must provide ACT or SAT scores prior to the Office of Admissions accepting ACCUPLACER Next Generation scores.

Admission by Transfer

Regardless of age, students who have at least a 2.0 GPA on all non-developmental college work attempted may transfer to LSUS if they meet all transfer requirements. Applicants for transfer must submit official transcripts from each college or university previously attended, regardless of whether or not credit was earned.

The University accepts credits earned in colleges and universities accredited by regional accrediting associations. Credits earned in some non-accredited institutions are accepted on a limited basis. The Dean of the College offering the degree determines the extent to which accepted credits are applied toward a degree. Evaluations of courses will not be made in advance of receipt of the completed application and official transcripts from each college and university attended.

Admission Exceptions

Students who do not meet the standard admissions criteria may be considered for a limited number of admission exceptions.

Early Admission

Superior students may be admitted to the University before graduating from high school, though such admission does not constitute the award of a high school diploma. Requirements include credit for 15 high school units, including 3 units in English, 2 units in Mathematics, 2 units in the social sciences, and 2 units in sciences.

Readmission of Former Students

Former students who were not registered at LSUS for the preceding regular semester must apply for readmission (no application fee is required). A student who has registered at another college or university since enrollment at LSUS must request that those institutions submit official transcripts directly to the LSUS Office of Admissions and Records, regardless of whether credit was earned.

Educational Enrichment Program (EEP)

Individuals who have been out of high school or college for at least three years and are seeking personal enrichment may enroll in the Educational Enrichment Program (EEP). No records of previous work are required for admission to this non-degree program, providing that the student is at least 25 years of age and at least three years have elapsed since last enrollment in high school, college, or university. A student in this non-degree program may register for a maximum of nine hours of credit during a fall or spring semester, six during a summer session, and may earn a maximum of 24 hours of credit.

Conditional Admission

Upon approval of the Office of Admissions and Records, an applicant who does not have complete admission documents on file at the time of admission may be granted conditional admission pending receipt of complete and satisfactory records. Upon receipt of all the required records of a conditionally admitted student, the admissibility of the student will be determined and the registration of a student who does not meet the admission requirements will be cancelled. A student admitted conditionally whose required records are not received within the first semester will be unable to register for future semesters. A student without complete records is not eligible for financial aid or veteran’s benefits.

Admission of International Students

An international student may apply for admission as a freshman or a transfer student. International students should submit an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with the completed application, complete official scholastic records, and other required documents at least 90 days before the beginning of the semester in which admission is desired.

International students must indicate the availability of sufficient funds to meet all costs while studying at the University. A complete educational background report is required and must be in the Office of Admissions and Records at least 90 days before the beginning of the semester in which admission is desired.

Undergraduate applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate college-level English proficiency before admission; upon arrival they may be required to enroll in credit-bearing (but not-for-degree-credit) English as a Second Language coursework based on university-administered placement tests. Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly to Louisiana State University Shreveport (Code Number 6355) by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Dual Enrollment

LSUS offers Dual Enrollment through the Academic Excellence Programs (AEP), offering high school students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit or college credit only. Tuition for AEP students is $50.00/credit hour and is subject to change annually.

LSU Admission Requirements

The acceptance rate at LSU is 73.3%. The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. requires you to be near the top of your class, and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.83, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.

LSU hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to LSU will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1180, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1320. The average ACT score at LSU is 27. The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 30.

Additional Information

  • Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee of $50 must accompany the application for admission or re-entry.
  • Scholarships: The application for admission also serves as the application for all freshman scholarship programs and for the Roger Hadfield Ogden Honors College. The priority deadline for full consideration for LSU scholarships and for admission to the Honors College is December 15.
  • Housing: Students applying for on-campus housing must first commit to LSU by submitting their enrollment deposit. Applying for admission does not entitle an applicant to university housing or financial aid.
  • Enrollment Deposit: LSU requires all admitted, first-time freshman and transfer students to indicate their intent to enroll by paying a non-refundable, required $200 deposit.
  • Immunizations: All students enrolling for the first time at LSU or after an absence of one semester or more must furnish proof of immunization for (or immunity to) measles, meningitis, mumps, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, and tuberculosis screening prior to enrollment at the university.
  • Selective Service: All persons who are required to register for the federal draft under the federal Military Selective Service Act shall be required to certify on their application for admission that they have registered with the Selective Service.
