Understanding the Costs of Lutheran West High School Education

Choosing a private school education involves carefully evaluating various factors, with tuition costs being a significant consideration. Lutheran West High School, committed to providing a Christ-centered education, offers various avenues for families to manage tuition expenses. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the tuition structure, available financial aid, scholarships, and other potential cost-reducing options at Lutheran West.

Base Tuition and Associated Fees

The base tuition for Lutheran West for the school year is $9,050. However, it's crucial to understand that this figure represents only a portion of the actual cost to educate each student, which is $16,500. The difference is bridged through fundraising efforts and support from various organizations. In addition to the base tuition, a $500 General Fee applies to both new and returning students. This fee encompasses several essential items, including a Chromebook for new students, ACT preparation resources, student body activities, yearbooks, and field trips. It's important to note that optional activity fees for athletics, fine arts, and robotics are not included in the general fee. Moreover, re-enrollees should be aware that the General Fee increases to $600 after March 1st. All 12th-grade students are charged a $100 graduation fee to cover the costs of robes, diplomas, graduation programs, and the graduation venue. This fee is added to the student’s payment plan and is non-refundable.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities

Lutheran West recognizes the importance of making quality education accessible. To that end, they offer need-based financial aid to qualified families. The school uses the FACTS system for tuition billing and collection. To be considered for financial aid, families must submit the required documentation, including W-2 forms and 1040 tax returns, by the specified deadline, typically April 15th. For students with two households, a separate FACTS tuition assistance application must be submitted for each household. Tuition assistance can only be applied to the applicant’s household. The Blackbaud ID for Lutheran High Westland is 12936.

Beyond financial aid, Lutheran West offers several scholarship opportunities. Hope LHS offers an Academic, a Leadership, and a Volunteer scholarship in the amount of $500 to all current students grades 10 through 12. There will be the same scholarships available to all incoming freshmen and transfer students. Scholarship applicants have enrollment form and registration fee on file to be eligible for these scholarships. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 15th, and awards are granted only to registered Hope Lutheran High School students.

Congregational Support and Partnership Discounts

Families affiliated with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregations may benefit from congregational support, which can significantly reduce tuition costs. Many Lutheran high schools are owned and operated by an association of congregations. With the help of local Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregations, the Lutheran High School Association (LHSA) was incorporated in Southeast Michigan more than 75 years ago (1944). Since then, LHSA schools have provided a Christian education for more than 15,000 students. These congregations choose to assist member families at various levels of congregational support, and ultimately, this helps bring down the cost of a LHSA education (if you are a member of one of these congregations). A partnership discount of $1,000 is available, made possible through the support of association churches and donors.

Families who are members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) will receive a $2,250 scholarship for first student and $1,250 for each additional student. This scholarship is granted once the appropriate form has been completed as part of the enrollment packet and is signed by the pastor(s) of the family’s home WELS/ELS congregation.

Additional Discounts and Payment Options

Lutheran West provides several additional discounts to help families manage tuition costs:

  • Multiple Student Discount: A 10% reduction is subtracted from the base tuition of the second, third, etc child’s tuition if more than one child per family is enrolled at Hope Lutheran High School. This discount will apply to families hosting exchange students. The host family base tuition will be reduced for one student by the 10%.
  • Church Worker Discount: Parents who are full-time church workers in a recognized LCMS congregation, school, or affiliated organization qualify for a $500 per student discount.
  • Direct Debit/Automatic Payment: Families enrolling in the automatic payment plan will receive $200 off the cost of tuition. Forms must be turned in by August 1st.
  • Pay in Full: A 5% discount will be given for any family paying tuition in full before the start of the school year.
  • Recruit-A-Patriot: Refer a student and receive a $100 discount on the current year’s tuition. Your name must be identified on the application submitted by the new student. Also, the new student must be accepted and attend Hope Lutheran High School prior to credit being given.

Lutheran West offers annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and 10-month plans. The 10-month payment plan will be considered the default payment option. Parents may choose a different plan by signing up for it in their FACTS account. All payments will be billed and will require automatic withdrawal from FACTS on behalf of Lutheran West. Payments can be made through FACTS via check, ACH, or credit card (+3% fee for credit card). Plans begin in July of each year. Students are expected to have started payments prior the beginning of the academic year in August. Tuition payments not received by the due date will be assessed a late fee of $15.

Understanding Tuition Payment Policies

Lutheran West expects that all tuition and fees will be paid in full by April of each school year. Delinquent tuition payments may result in a student being withheld from classes and activities until the account becomes current. In addition, past due accounts can also result in student not being able to return the following semester and/or school year. Report cards, records, diplomas, and transcripts will not be released until all tuition and fees are paid in full.

In the case a student is withdrawn or dismissed from Lutheran West at any time during the school year, families will be expected to pay any current and past invoices before records are released. In the case a student is withdrawn or dismissed after July 1st, a $500 withdrawal fee is non-refundable. Upon the start of the first day of school, the cost of withdrawal is based on the current school withdrawal policy outlined in the student handbook. The date of withdrawal/dismissal will be the date specified by the principal. Students who enroll after the school year has begun will be charged tuition on a per-diem basis beginning with the day they enroll.

RESTORED BLESSINGS - Up To $2,000Families of Hope Lutheran High School who qualify can apply for tuition grants beginning immediately. These grants are $500 per student per quarter for 4 quarters for a total of $2,000. This amount is available for each person that volunteers. Grants can be designated for any student.

GUARDIAN ANGEL PROGRAM - Up To Full TuitionThrough the generous support of select donors, we are able to offer full tuition scholarships to a few select students.

Giving Opportunities

Tuition covers only a portion of the total cost of education for each student, so all giving truly does make a difference. The Annual Fund seeks unrestricted gifts to support ongoing needs at both schools. Unrestricted gifts are vitally important because they provide long-term strength and stability. Those gifts allow leadership to address high priority needs, respond to unforeseen situations, and invest in high potential areas for institutional advancement. The Triumph Fund (a DBA of The Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization of Ohio) raises scholarship dollars for students to attend Lutheran West. Donations to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) like The Triumph Fund also qualify the donor for a dollar-for-dollar (up to $750 per person or $1,500 for those filing jointly) tax credit on their Ohio state income tax, or a deduction on their federal income tax return. The Forward in Faith capital campaign is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to affirm our commitment to Christ-centered education in Northeast Ohio. A unique and generous community of alumni, donors, and friends make it possible for Lutheran West to provide a robust and rewarding educational experience for young people.
