Unveiling the Make a Difference Scholarship: Empowering Futures Through Alternative Education
In the realm of education, conventional paths often dominate. However, a less-traveled road exists, particularly for students in alternative programs. Recognizing the unique challenges and potential of these students, the Make a Difference Scholarship offers a distinctive opportunity. This article delves into the requirements, eligibility, and impact of this scholarship, highlighting how it empowers students to achieve their educational aspirations and make a meaningful difference in the world.
Recognizing Unique Potential
The Make a Difference Scholarship stands apart by celebrating the unique potential of students in alternative programs. These programs, such as career and technical education, special education, alternative high school, and high school equivalency programs, cater to students whose educational journeys may deviate from the traditional norm. The scholarship acknowledges that these students often face limited scholarship opportunities despite their drive and capabilities.
Unlike traditional scholarships that measure applicants against a single standard, the Make a Difference Scholarship encourages applicants to showcase how alternative education has positively impacted their lives. It emphasizes the difference they have made for themselves and how the partnership between them and their eligible programs will contribute to their future success.
Financial Support and Eligible Expenses
The Make a Difference Scholarship provides financial assistance to recipients for expenses related to post-secondary education or training, with scholarships reaching a maximum of $7,500. Up to 50% of the total scholarship can be accessed per semester, offering flexibility and ongoing support.
These scholarships can be applied toward a range of educational expenses, including:

- Tuition
- Books
- Supplies
- Room and board
- Specialized services
- Other needs approved by the Foundation Board
Recipients are required to provide documentation outlining how the scholarship funds will be utilized before the funds are approved and disbursed. The Foundation Board retains the final decision-making authority regarding the eligibility of any expenditure. Furthermore, the scholarship is contingent upon the recipient's continuous enrollment in the post-secondary program for which it was awarded.
Apprenticeship Awards
In addition to scholarships, the Make a Difference program also offers awards to students pursuing post-secondary professional apprenticeships, with awards reaching a maximum of $1,500. These awards are designed to cover expenses directly related to the apprenticeship, such as:
- Equipment
- Tools
- Other essential expenses
Similar to scholarships, recipients must provide documentation detailing how the award funds will be used before approval and disbursement. The Foundation Board holds the final authority on the eligibility of expenditures. To receive funds, recipients must be actively employed in a post-secondary apprenticeship. With proper documentation of eligible expenses, the entire award amount, up to $1,500, can be disbursed in a single payment.
Scholarship Review Committee
To ensure a fair and comprehensive evaluation process, the Educational Foundation Board annually appoints a Scholarship Review Committee. This committee comprises representatives from various groups, including:
- The Monroe 2-Orleans Educational Foundation Board of Directors
- Component district superintendents and Boards of Education
- The BOCES 2 Board
- BOCES 2 administrators
This diverse representation ensures that the selection process is well-rounded and considers the perspectives of various stakeholders in the educational community.

Tracking Post-Secondary Success
The Foundation is committed to supporting students continuing in post-secondary education or training. To that end, the Foundation will occasionally ask Make All the Difference Scholarship and Award recipients for information about their post-secondary experience. Information received is treated confidentially. No information will identify individual students.
